Michel Cadotte (July 22, 1764 – July 8, 1837) (also spelled Michael, Cadott, Cadeau, and other variations) or (Ojibwe: Kechemeshane (or Gichi-miishen in the contemporary spelling) "Great Michel")
He was a Métis fur trader of Ojibwe and French-Canadian descent who dominated business in the area of northern Wisconsin and the south shore of Lake Superior.
Cadotte was born in Saulte Ste. Marie, Michigan in 1764. Sometime after 1792, Cadotte established a trading post at La Pointe on Madeline Island. From this advantageous site he built a large and flourishing fur trade that served northern Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota.
His marriage to Ikwesewe (also Equay-say-way or Traveling Woman), the daughter of Waub-i-je-jauk head of the White Crane clan, an Ojibwe chief, and his understanding of the Indians won him the affection of local tribes. It also gained him a monopoly of their trade.
For a time, Cadotte was one of the most successful traders in the area, but the invasion of the American Fur Company plus a disastrous raid by a band of Ojibwe Indians in 1811 eventually broke him. Cadotte was forced to become an agent of John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company.
Cadotte retired in 1823 and left his business to his two American sons-in-law, the brothers Lyman and Truman Warren. He died on July 8, 1837, and was buried at La Pointe in the Indian Cemetery.

The double wide bural plot for Elizabeth in the Oakland Cemetery in Saint Paul, Minnesota was meant for Elizabeth and her husband James Gordon. The grave marker shows both of their names. However, the plot plan for the burial area shows Elizabeth's casket buried in the middle of the two plots. James Gordon died about 1892 in Cooladerry, Ireland and is buried nearby at Kilbehenny, Ireland.

James Gordon, probate announcement, 1892
Note
James died in Cooladerry, Ireland in 1892 where he was employed as a "land steward". His Will was probated later that year at Waterford, Ireland.
In 1894 his wife Elizabeth, daughter Nora and son William emmigrated to America. His wife Elizabeth died in 1900 in Saint Paul, Minnesota and is buried in Oakland Cemetery. The monument marker on her grave would indicate that James, who died in 1892 is also buried there but the cemetery records indicate that only Elizabeth is buried in that plot. James was buried in Kilbehenny Ireland. There doesn't seem to be a grave marker for him and a portion of the cemetery was built over by a Community Center so the question remain, where exactly is he buried in the local cemetery.
