Note
Dromore consists almost entirely of moorland, and is adjacent to the upper Fleet towards the north-eastern extremity of Kirkmabreck parish. It’s fairly remote even by present-day standards, is fit only for sheep, and not many at that. Trying to scratch a living from it in the mid-1700s, as Samuel Gordon did, would have been a very tough proposition indeed, and literally a hand to mouth existence, with the ever-present threat of starvation. Added to that, the contemporary climate was consistently cold and wet, so they must have been hardy people.
