    Obituary
    Obituary of John Thomas Stillwell
Little Falls Transcript, Little Falls, MN, Monday, February 11, 1895

Called From Earth: STILLWELL-On Saturday, February 9, 1895, of paralysis, John T. Stillwell, aged 76 years.

The deceased was a native of New York state and came to this country in 1848, and was employed as a carpenter when Fort Ripley was built. Later he was married to Miss Nancy B. Warren, and later opened a hotel at Swan River which he conducted for a number of years. He then made a pre-emption on the piece of land near Swan River now owned by Milo Porter. A few years after he moved to Little Falls and worked at his trade, building many of the first houses in this city.

He was the father of four children, Geo. Stillwell and Mrs. Thomas C. Gordon, of this city, Mrs. Jennie Talent of Butte, Mont., and Miss Emma Stillwell, who died a number of years ago. Mr. Stillwell continued to keep his house at the old home on Fifth Street, until his daughter was married when he took up his residence with her. Five years ago he had a stroke of paralysis and during most of the time since he has been confined to his home. He grew worse within the last month and had two more strokes which finally took him off.

Mr. Stillwell was an honest, conscientious man and we doubt if he had an enemy. He was highly respected by the people of Morrison county and had held the offices of county commissioner and coroner; the duties pertaining to these offices he performed faithfully and well.

The funeral will be held from the Episcopal church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.

    Obituary of Nancy Beaumont Warren
Little Falls Transcript, Little Falls, MN, July 8, 1887

STILLWELL-At her home in the village of Little Falls, Minn., on Monday, July 4, 1887, at 4 o'clock p.m. of consumption, Nancy, wife of J.T. Stillwell, aged 58 years.

The deceased had been in gradually failing health for more than a year, and her death was not expected. The close of her life was very peaceful. She retained consciousness to the last, saying to those about here that she was ready and willing to die, and with loving words to the grief stricken family gently passed away.

She leaves a husband and three children, George W. and Mary A. of this place, and Mrs. Walter Tallant of Larimore, Dakota Territory who were all with her during her last hours.

She came to Little Falls in 1859, being one of the oldest settlers of this place, and well known throughout the community. Kind to the sick and needy, sympathetic to the afflicted, and charitable toward all, many without the broken family circle will feel the loss of a loving friend.

She was a devoted member of the Episcopal church, and the funeral service on Wednesday morning, were conducted by the rector, Rev. L.C. Birch. A large congregation was present to pay the final tribute to her memory.

    Biography
The following is a short biography of Nancy Beaumont Warren with information provided by Theresa Schenck, 132 Brook Valley Road, Towaco, NJ 07082 (May 1988)

From what I can piece together from unpublished documents, Nancy Warren was raised by her aunt and uncle, Lyman Marcus Warren and Mary Cadotte, as well as by her mother Charlotte Cadotte Warren and her stepfather, James Ermatinger. In 1838 Lyman and Mary moved from La Pointe to Chippewa City, Wisconsin, where he had been appointed sub-agent for the Indians who lived in the vicinity. This is about five miles north of Chippewa Falls. James Ermatinger and Charlotte probably moved to Vermilion Falls, now Jim Falls, about the same time. In 1835 the four Warren boys ( Edward and George - Truman and Charlotte's sons and William and Truman - Lyman and Mary's sons) were taken to Clarkson, N.Y. by their Warren grandfather (Lyman Warren) to be educated. Edward and George (twins) were 12, William was 10 and Truman was 8.

In 1838 Mary Cadotte Warren took her neice Nancy Beaumont Warren, and her own daughters to Clarkson to visit their grandfather and brothers. Nancy stayed until 1843 (age 18) and attended school at Clarkson Academy. The two older Warren girls, Julia and Charlotte, also stayed.

After her return from New York, Nancy probably went to live at La Pointe, Wisconsin where her uncle Lyman Warren returned after the death of his wife in 1843. The Warren girls returned to Wisconsin in 1844 and seemed to have lived the the Dr. Borup family where they attended school with his children. In 1848 Julia (age 16) and Nancy Beaumont (age 23) cousins, went to the Chippewa River to visit Jim and Charlotte Ermatinger (Nancy's mother and stepfather). Lyman Warren (her uncle) had died in 1847 at La Pointe, and Nancy's brother Edward had died in 1849 (age 26) in a hunting accident. It seems that the girls stayed with the Ermatingers for a while. About 1850 the Warren girls followed their brother William Whipple Warren to Minnesota. (Note: The Minnesota Territorial Census of 1850 shows Charlotte and Sophia living at Fort Gaines, now called Fort Ripley in Morrison County.

William Whipple Warren with wife Matilda Aitken and children Alfred A., Cordelia H. and William V. living at Gull Lake on 10th September. After 1850 Nancy Beaumont moved to Minnesota and was living with her cousin Julia in Swan River in 1852. Julia had just married Duncan Stuart. Sophia was now there too, and Charlotte, the other sister was in St Paul. Nancy probably married John Thomas Stilwell about this time. John Stilwell was a carpenter from New York. In the 1850 census he was shown living in the Sauk Rapids District - probably Swan River. He worked at his trade there and ran the busy hotel there. Later they moved to Little Falls where Mary Alice Stilwell was born in 1864. Nancy died in 1887 in Little Falls and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery next to her husband and infant child Emily A.
