    Chef Gordon in Action
    Beginning with this evening and for several days if T.C. Gordon cannot be found in his office during regular business hours, he can be reached by phone at his residence, where he plans on doing the "chief cook" act with the electric range now being installed. The result of Mr. Gordon's experiment will be watched with interest as several are planning on installing electric ranges in the near future. The electric range is not only a convenience, but an economizer in fuel as shown by its use in other places and will duplicate its usefulness here.

    THOMAS C. GORDON.

    The biographer takes pleasure in herewith presenting a few facts in the life of Thomas C. Gordon, one of the most enterprising citizens of Little Falls, Morrison county, Minnesota.

    Thomas C. Gordon is a native of Wales, born in the southern portion of that country on March 16, 1866, son of James and Margaret Elizabeth (McKean) Gordon. The mother was a native of Kirkcudbright, Scotland, while the father was born in Dumfries. James Gordon had been educated as a civil engineer, but he devoted the active years of his life almost entirely to agricultural work and passed his entire life in various parts of the United Kingdom. He made a study of agriculture and stock raising and was known as one of the most advanced agriculturists of his country. He imported from America the first harvesting machine which entered Ireland. This was a Deering and was a great wonder in those days. He also took into Ireland the first herd of Scotch sheep and demonstrated that they were better adapted to conditions of the Emerald Isle than those native to it. James Gordon, was throughout his life a faithful member of the Presbyterian church and was a man of strong individuality and marked ability.

    Thomas C. Gordon is the fifth child in a family of nine children and received his elementary education at a private school in Wales. He came to this country when twenty-one years of age, landing at New York city and coming direct to Minnesota. At Saint Paul he took up work with the Little Falls Water Power Company. However, he remained in that city but a month, when he was transferred to Little Falls. That was in 1887 and he has since made Little Falls his home, being prominently identified with the life of that place. For about two years after forming his connection with the company in question he was assistant to the engineer and also kept the books of the company, and in 1889 he was made secretary-treasurer. He fills that position still with the addition of the duties of general manager, conferred on him in 1903.

    In addition to his duties with the Little Falls Water Power Company, Mr. Gordon has found time for taking an interest in several other business ventures. In the fall of 1888 he organized and assumed the management of the Gordon Lumber Company at Little Falls, which firm did a retail lumber business and Mr. Gordon continued at its head for three years, when he disposed of his interest. In 1890 he formed a corporation known as the Peoples Ice Company, and he remained with that company for twelve years, when he sold his interest. In the same year (1890) he organized the Little Falls Building and Loan Association and was made its secretary and treasurer. He continued in that connection as an officer for about three years. Mr. Gordon was also secretary of the Little Falls Milling Company, from 1890 to 1894, and was secretary of the Little Falls Electric and Water Company, now inactive. He was also instrumental in forming the Morrison County Electric Light, Heat and Power Company, now out of existence, and was its secretary-treasurer. He also fills the same office for the Pike Rapids Hydro- Electric Company, which owns and controls an excellent power site, which, however, has never been developed. Mr. Gordon through his unusual ability has contributed very largely to the commercial life of his chosen city and this Community is much indebted to him for its advancement along many lines. Thomas C. Gordon was married on May 17, 1889, to Mary A. Stilwell, born in Little Falls on May 19, 1864, and to their union have been born four children. Warren, the eldest, married Georgia St. Martin; Harker, Bertha and Mercy are still at home with the parents. Mr. Gordon and his family are held in high esteem by their many friends and move in the best
    social circles of their city.

    Mr. Gordon has for many years been a devout member of the Episcopal church and advances its interests whenever possible. Politically, he is a Republican and has served his party as alderman of Little Falls for two years. For the past fourteen years he has been a member of the board of education of this city and in 1915 was again elected for a three-year term. For the past eight years, he has served that body as its president.

    While not directly interested in agriculture, Mr. Gordon has the best interests of the farming element at heart and is an earnest advocate of twentieth-century methods in that vocation, and as an evidence of his sympathy with those so engaged, he fills the office of president of the Agricultural Society of Morrison county. Mr. Gordon holds fraternal affiliation with the time-honored body of Freemasonry, the Knights of Pythias, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Knights of the Maccabees, and the Modern Woodmen, of America, in the workings of all of which he evinces more than a passive interest. Mr. Gordon is a good representative of a virile type of manhood—the men who do things, and these men become the natural leaders in any community where their lot may be cast. Mr. Gordon possesses keen foresight, good judgment and his honor and integrity are above reproach. He is one of the worthy citizens of Little Falls who are always anxious to acquire for their city all possible advantages possessed by any other, and as a man of many excellent parts he is held in high esteem by all.

    Little Falls Mourns Death of T.C. Gordon

    Every resident of the city as well as those in other localities who knew Thomas C. Gordon will learn with sorrow and regret of his death which occurred yesterday afternoon at his home here, following a year's illness.

    Though everything known to medical science was done in his behalf, added to the loving care of his wife and two daughters, who are trained nurses, the ravages of disease could not be checked and he gradually grew weaker, finally falling into a peaceful sleep shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon from which he did not waken. He had been in fairly good health the past few months, but suddenly became weaker yesterday morning.

The two sons have been associated with their father in the motor business, Miss Bertha is a trained nurse employed at Rochester and Miss Mercy has similar employment at Milwaukee.

    Mr. Gordon was for many years a devout member of the Episcopal church and assisted greatly in its work here. He served as alderman of the city for two years, and for 15 years or more was a member of the board of education. He served as president of that body for eight years.

They are Will Gordon, British Columbia; George Gordon, Los Angeles; James Gordon, St. Paul; Mrs. Jessie Quosbarth, St. Paul; Mrs. Bertha Munson, Minneapolis; Mrs. Nora Swarbreck, Minneapolis; Mrs. Maggie Napier, St. Paul; Mrs. Elizabeth MacDonald, London England.

    Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Episcopal church, Rev. Arthur Goodger officiating. Following the service at the church the local masonic lodge will take charge and perform the services at the grave. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. members of the masonic order will be pallbearers. They are J.K. Martin, G.W. Massey, George Peterson, N.J. Peterson, Dr. C.H. Longley and Harry Stillwell.

    Members of the Masonic and Elks lodges will meet at their respective lodge halls shortly before time for the services and attend the church as delegations.

    Mrs. Mary Gordon Dies In Chicago

    Mrs. Mary Gordon, 75, died last evening at Billings hospital in Chicago, where she had been receiving treatment since November 19 when she fell and fractured her hip. Miss Bertha Gordon of Chicago and Harker Gordon of Pittsburgh will accompany the body here, arriving tomorrow noon, and Miss Mercy Gordon of St. Paul will join them en route. Funeral arrangements have not been completed but services will probably be held Saturday afternoon.

    Mary A. Stillwell was born in Little Falls May 19, 1864, the daughter of John and Nancy Warren Stillwell, who resided on Fifth street and First avenue northeast. She was married to Thomas C. Gordon May 17, 1889. Mrs. Gordon moved to Minneapolis and for the past few years has been in Chicago with her daughter.

    Surviving are four children, Warren M. Gordon of this city; Harker, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mercy, St. Paul, and Bertha, Chicago.

    The following is an excerpt from the "Biography of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Gordon given by Mrs. Gordon and taken from the "Histories of Morrison and Todd Counties" as recorded by Mrs. Minnie Cochrane for the Morrison County Historical Society - November 1937.
    Mary A. Stilwell was born in Little Falls, May 19, 1864. She is the daughter of John Thomas Stilwell and Nancy Warren Stilwell. Thomas Stilwell was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He came to Swan River in 1849. "This deserted village" as Frank B. Logan styles it in "Historical Sketches of Royalton and Vicinity", was located on the East bank of the Mississippi River seven miles northwest of Royalton. At the time Mr. Stilwell came to Swan River, it was a busy trading post. William H. Hood, editor of "Frontiersman", said of it in 1855: "There was probably more business done at this point (1848-51) than at any other place in the country and more than has ever been done there since. It was a rendezvous of all the principal Indian traders among the Chippewas and Winnebagoes - a depot for Indian goods. The place was always filled with strangers. All sorts of spirits gathered there - some for fun, some for money, and all for something. The hotel was well kept and always crowded." The first ferry in Morrison County was established at Swan River by William Aiken in 1848.
    Thomas Stilwell was a carpenter and worked at his trade in Swan River until 1856 when he ran the hotel. While living in Swan River he married Nancy Warren who came with her parents to Swan River from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. One of Nancy Warren's ancestors came over in the Mayflower and others fought in the American Revolution.
    After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Stilwell remained for a time in Swan River. Two of their children, John and Sara Jane, were born there. Sara Jane Stilwell is now Mrs. Tellant. She resided in Florida and has been very active in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. "Was one of the instigators of the movement by the D.A.R.'s to purchase the land in Washington D.C. upon which the organization built its beautiful Memorial Hall." Mr. and Mrs. Stilwell moved to Little Falls in the early sixties and Mary was born there in 1864.
    After coming to Little Falls, Mr. Stilwell followed his trade as carpenter and became a contractor, often going into the Western country to build elevators. At one time his work called him as far west as Fort Assinniboine, Montana. Mrs. Gordon says, "The family felt very sad when he had to go so far away, to the ends of the earth. When he came home he had many interesting stories to tell of his adventures. Sometimes when traveling on the Red River, the boat would have to stop and wait for a herd of buffalo to cross over."
    After moving to Little Falls, Mr. Stilwell bought half a block on the southside of First Avenue between Fifth and Fourth Streets. "This was before there were any railroad tracks on the eastside."
    Mr. Stilwell died July 4, 1887 and Mrs. Stilwell died at the Gordon home in Little Falls. Mary Stilwell attended school in Little Falls. "There was no high school then." Among the teachers she remembers are Mrs. E.S. Smith "who was a great person to always be getting up plays for the interest of the school" and J.C. Flynn, " a very good teacher." Mary attended church and Sunday school at the old Episcopal Church which was built in 1869 and located at the corner of First Street and Third Avenue N.E. (In 1900 this building was moved from First Street to the rear of the lot at Fourth Street and First Avenue SouthEast where the present Episcopal church is). When the new church was built in 1903, the old building was sold to the Swedish Methodist Congregation and moved down on the flats. Mr. Elwell was the first rector she remembers. Her mother, Mrs. Nancy Stilwell, was one of the four charter members of the Episcopal church.

    Warren M. Gordon, Sr.

    Warren M. Gordon, Sr., 69, 201 Fourth St. S.E., died early today in St. Gabriel's hospital. A lifelong resident of Little Falls, he had been employed by the Ford agency for the past 23 years.

    He is survived by his wife, the former Georgianna St. Martin, three sons and two daughters; Thomas, and Mrs. Claude Morris (Joan), Minneapolis; Warren, Jr., Gary and Mrs. C.H. Rausch (Patricia), Little Falls. A brother Harker, lives in Pittsburgh, Pa., and there are two sisters, Bertha Gordon, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mercy Gordon, St. Paul. There are ten grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's church, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. T Leo Keaveny officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Friends may call in the Simonet Funeral home, visitation to start Tuesday afternoon. The rosary will be prayed there at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

    James Harker Gordon graduated from the Little Falls High School. He attended the University of Minnesota, graduated from Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

    During World War I he was overseas about nine months. He returned to Little Falls where he was employed at the Gordon Motor Company and later was employed in the advertising department of the Westinghouse Company in Pennsylvania.

    Antoine St. Martin

    There were some very bad rumors afloat on Christmas day about the un-fortunate death of A. St. Martin, the barber. It was represented that he had been robbed and slugged and doped. There seems to be no truth to the rumors. He left his shop just before midnight and remarked to a friend that he was going home, and that one Christmas season would pass without his taking a drink of liquor. He started home alone, and was next heard of in one of Second street saloons. He obtained liquor there, but it is claimed not directly from the dealer, that being denied him. The liquor affected him quite promptly, as it usually did during the somewhat distant past when he yielded to the habit. He displayed some money, $50 or $70, and friends took it to care for it, and the man was taken home, where he soon died.

    His relatives and friends had used every effort in the past to stop his drinking, as it always had a most serious effect on him. Those who knew him best were most helpful of late that he had finally conquered the habit.

    He had the greatest affection for his four daughters and they loved their father dearly. These associations were surely the most powerful influences that had apparently almost saved him to a happy and useful life. Some of the daughters were able to be of assistance in supporting the family by teaching and working, but the younger ones were still in school and dependent.

    It is cruel to say so, but a legal lid would have been an assurance of one more happy home in Little Falls on the merry Christmas day.

    Dies of Heart Failure

    Antoine St. Martin, a well known barber of this city, died from heart failure due to intestinal troubles between 2 and 3 a.m. Christmas.

    The deceased was born in Canada 51 years ago. When a boy he moved to Fall River, Mass. but later moved to Minneapolis and lived there until three years ago when he came to Little Falls. Since that time he has been engaged in the barber business.

    The deceased leaves five daughters and two brothers to mourn his loss. His daughters are Mrs. Carl Richardson of San Diego, Cal., Eleanor, Belle, Georgia, and Margaret of this city; his brothers, Joseph and Frank of Fall River.

    The funeral was held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday from the house.

    The funeral of Mrs. Rachel St. Martin, daughter of Mrs. Philomen Richard of this city, was held from Notre Dame de Lourdes church, Minneapolis, Thursday morning at 9 o'clock.

    According to her daughter, Georgianna in 1988:
    When Rachel died of consumption, their grandmother Philomene Richard had the girls move to Little Falls because she didn't want them to live with their father. They moved to a house across the street from the Richards and the oldest sister, Eleanor, took responsibility for raising the girls. It was hard on Eleanor and she only married herself for a short time.
    Their father, Anthony St. Martin, said "They aren't going to take his daughters away from him."; so he moved to Little Falls and set up a barber shop. He later died there in 1907.

    Georgianna Gordon, age 103, died November 4, 1992 at her home in Little Falls.
    Funeral services wil be held November 9 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Little Falls.
    Georgianna Gordon was born August 14, 1889 in Fall Rivers, MA. (ed. not correct, she was born in Minneapolis,MN) to the late Anthony and Rochelle (Richard) St. Martin. At a young age, she moved with her family to Minneapolis, attended school there, later moving to Little Falls where she graduated from high school. After high school, she moved back to Minneapolis and worked as a telephone operator. She was united in marriage on August 14, 1913 to Warren M. Gordon, Sr. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After their marriage, the couple moved to Little Falls where they owned and operated Gordon Motor Company. After her husbands death on September 21, 1959, she moved to her daughter's home where she resided until her death. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Christian Mothers and a former member of the Child Interest Club.
    Survivors include a son and daughters, Thomas C. Gordon of Edina, Patricia Gordon Rausch and Joan Gordon Morris, both of Little Falls, eleven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sons: Warren M. "Buzz" Gordon, Jr., daughter, Rochelle Gordon and sisters Eleanor St. Martin, Marie Richardson, Marguerite Barber and Bell St. Martin.
    Pallbearers will be Patrick J. Morris, Robert Barber, Thomas C. Gordon II, Warren M. Gordon III, Roy DeRosier and Steven R. Setzler.

    WARREN M. "BUZZ" GORDON

    Warren M. "Buzz" Gordon, 60, of 615 N.E. 11th St., Little Falls, died Thursday evening in Minneapolis. Funeral services will be Monday at 1 P.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Little Falls. The services will be concelebrated. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

    Visitation in the Simonet Funeral Home in Little Falls will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and also on Monday prior to services. The parish Prayer Service will be recited at 8 p.m. and the Christian Mother Prayer Service will be at 7:30 p.m.

    Mr. Gordon was born July 1, 1919 in Little Falls, sons of Warren M. and Georgiana Gordon Sr. He lived in Little Falls all of his life. He was a retired chief stock controller at Camp Ripley. He married Patricia Durenberger August 14, 1946 at St. Francis Xavier Church in Little Falls.

    Mr. Gordon was a World War II and Korean Veteran, a member of the executive board of Boy Scouts of America, and past president of Community Corrections. He was a member of Exchange Club, and a member of the Board of Housing and Urban Development. He was a past member of Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, and an usher and lector at St. Mary's Church.

    Survivors include his wife, Patricia, sons Warren III (Sandy) of Anchorage, James of Tampa; daughters Suzanne McCollough, Tampa, Mrs. Steve (Nancy) Grams, Grand Island, Neb.; brother Thomas C., Bedford, N.H., sisters Joan Morris, Ceour-D-Alene, Idaho, Patricia Rausch, Little Falls, and mother Mrs. W.M. Georgiana Gordon of Little Falls. He is also survived by three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Rochelle.

  • Biography
    Warren McKean "Buzz" Gordon Jr. was born July 1, 1919 in Little Falls, Morrison Co, Minnesota. He was the second of five children of Warren McKean Gordon Sr. and Georgiana St. Martin.

    As a child, approximately 1930, the family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he attended Creighton High School for a short time. The family returned to Little Falls where Buzz attended Little Falls High School where he graduated in 1939.

    After high school he joined the Minnesota National Guard and served his basic training at Camp Claiborne, LA. He was assigned to active duty at the start of World War II, 1942 and served in the European campaign. He served with the 5th Army in North Africa, Italy, and trained in Ireland and England. He received a Purple Heart for wounds received in Italy.

    An article in the Little Falls newspaper read:

    Sgt Warren Gordon Gets Purple Heart

    Wounded in action in Italy January 3, Sgt Warren (Buzz) Gordon, son of Mr. And Mrs. W.M. Gordon, has received the Purple Heart award.

    Warren received leg wounds when his outfit was bombed by about 25 German airmen. At the same time he was injured, one of his close friends, who was standing next to him was killed. It was the same bombing in which Sgt. John Patyk and Ronald DelaHunt were injured.

    Buzz was released from active duty in 1945 and he returned to Little Falls. In the fall of 1945 he moved to Chicago to attend Northern Illinois College of Ophthalmology in order to pursue a career in that field. For personal reasons he dropped out of school and returned to Little Falls, Minnesota to live. It was there that he met his future wife, Patricia Mary Durrenberger, originally from Perham, Minnesota. They were married at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Little Falls in August 14, 1946 and celebrated their wedding reception at the Little Falls Country Club. Buzz and Pat had four children, all born in Little Falls. They were Warren McKean Patrick "Sandy" Gordon III (June 17, 1947), Suzanne Marie Gordon (January 10, 1950), Nancy Ann Gordon (August 20, 1954), and James Patrick Gordon (December 8, 1956).

    In 1947 Buzz accepted civilian employment as a warehouse supervisor with the Minnesota National Guard at Camp Ripley, Minnesota, just 7 miles north of Little Falls. At the same time, he opened a tavern called the 34th Club on Highway 371 just north of Little Falls. He was a partner in this venture with Bill "Sonny" Arndt. They operated the tavern for about 18 months until it went out of business.

    In late 1950 he was called back to active duty because of the Korean Conflict. He was assigned to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin where he served for several months years until being discharged for his recurring medical problems. During his absence, Patricia and children, Sandy and Suzanne lived in an apartment above the American Legion club near the Northeast corner of First Street and Broadway in Little Falls. In June 1951 the family moved to a small, two-story, 3 bedroom home at 114 8th Street SE where they lived for approximately 25 years and raised a family of four children.

    During the late 1950's and 1960's, Buzz became involved as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. In appreciation for his outstanding efforts, he received many awards including the Silver Beaver Award. In addition, he served as the President of the Central Minnesota Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

    In 1973 Buzz received a disability retirement from his position as Chief Stock Controller at Camp Ripley due to his recurring stomach problems related to his service during World War II. In 1978, Buzz and Pat sold their family home and moved to an apartment about a mile from their former home. This is where they lived until his untimely passing in 1980.

    At the age of 60, Warren died in his sleep on March 27, 1980 at the home of his nephew, Michael Morris, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He had traveled to Minneapolis to attend a doctor's appointment and was staying with his nephew for the evening. The cause of his death was listed on his death certificate as a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

    Among other accomplishments, his obituary in the Little Falls newspaper said "Mr. Gordon was a World War II and Korean Veteran, a member of the executive board of Boy Scouts of America, and past president of Community Corrections. He was a member of Exchange Club, and a member of the Board of Housing and Urban Development. He was a past member of Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, and an usher and lector at St. Mary's Church".

    He was buried on March 31, 1980 at Calvary Cemetery in Little Falls with funeral services at the St. Mary's Catholic Church.

    b. District Finance Officer for the Central Minnesota Council from 1958
    c. Chairman of the Annual Drive for funds in the city of Little Falls for three years
    d. Named Scouter of the Year by the President of the Central Minnesota Council of Boy Scouts of America in 1960
    e. Vice President of the Central Minnesota Council of BSA from Non 1963-65
    f. Awarded the Silver Beaver Award from the Cental Minnesota Council in 1964

    Died Rochelle Mary Gordon, the seven-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Gordon, died at 11:20 last night at St. Gabriel's hospital as the result of peritonitis, after an illness of about three days. An operation was performed yesterday in efforts to save the little one's life, but it was futile.

    AMERICAN FALLS, Idaho -- JoAnn "Joan" Marie Morris, 72, American Falls, Idaho and formerly of Little Falls, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at the Power County Nursing Home in American Falls.

    She was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Little Falls to Warren and Georgianna Gordon II. She graduated from St. Francis High School in 1945. She married Claude Morris. They lived in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. They later divorced. She moved to Minneapolis where she worked for Coldwell Banker and Martin Homes as a receptionist. In 1986, she moved to Little Falls. After her mother died in 1992, she moved to American Falls. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Little Falls and Presentation of the Lord, St. Mary's in American Falls.

    Survivors include three sons, Patrick Morris, Overland Park, Kan., Michael Morris, Phoenix, and Gordon Morris, Lenexa, Kan.; three daughters, Carolyn Setzler, Apple Valley, Kathryn Morris, Spokane, Wash., and Claudia Brulotte, American Falls; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Patricia Schroeder, Little Falls.

    Her parents, two brothers, Thomas Gordon III, and Warren "Buzz" Gordon II, and a sister, Rochelle Gordon, died earlier.

    Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Little Falls with Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery of Little Falls. A memorial mass was also conducted at Presentation of the Lord, St. Mary's Parish in American Falls, Idaho.

    Obituary of Patricia Gordon

    Patricia M. Schroeder, 92-year-old resident of Little Falls, passed away at home on Wednesday, May 19, after a valiant struggle with pancreatic cancer and COPD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, May 26 at 11:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Little Falls. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

    Patricia Gordon was born February 6, 1929 in Little Falls, MN to Warren and Georgianna Gordon. She attended grade school at the old Washington School, later attending St. Francis High School for one year then going to Little Falls High School, graduating in 1947. She then attended nurses training school in Breckenridge, MN. Pat finished her training at Miller Hospital in St. Paul, MN. She came back to Little Falls and went to work for Dr. Milo Hanson as his nurse. She worked for Dr. Milo Hanson for almost forty years. She then went to the Little Falls Clinic where she stayed until she retired in 1998. Pat married Robert Schroeder on January 3, 1997. A memorable day as that night there was a snowstorm that left 21 inches of snow. Pat loved gardening and spoiling her dogs. She was a mother to her nieces and nephews. She was a wonderful cook and baker, especially her apple pie. Pat was a member of St. Mary's Church and helped serve with the funeral group.

    Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Robert; stepsons, Larry (Roberta) Schroeder, Cory Schroeder; five nieces and five nephews and her faithful dog Molly.

    INTERESTING AFFAIR BEAUTIFULLY CARRIED OUT

    Miss Angela Weibeler, daughter of W.H. Weibeler, and Mr. John Durrenberger of St. Paul, were united in marriage at Sts. Peter and Paul's church Wednesday morning, Rev. John Curry officiating.

    Miss Helen Weibeler were maid of honor, and Ray Durrenberger was best man. The other attendants of the bridal party were Miss Mary Durrenberger and Miss Clara Townsend, and Messrs. Christian Weibeler and Nicholas Schons.

    The bride was attired in a gown of bride's satin trimmed with Spanish lace and fur with full court train, the veil caught with orange blossoms and carried a shower bouquet of roses and lilies of the valley. The bride's maids were attired in yellow crepe de chene and carried pink roses.

    A wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride's father for the immediate relatives. The rooms were decorated beautifully with oak leaves and yellow chrysanthemums.

    After an extended wedding trip through the northern part of the state, Mr. and Mrs. Durrenberger will be at home in Wadena.

    Those from out of town who were here for the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. A. Durrenberger, Miss Veronica Durrenberger, Peter Durrenberger, Miss Ida Tobias, of St. Paul; Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Weibeler and Mrs. Fred Heywood, of Aitken; Miss Esther Rethwill, of Le Sueur.

    PIONEER MERCHANT DIES
    WM. H. WEIBELER PASSED AWAY TUESDAY AFTERNOON ATTAINS FINE AGE - TOOK LEADING PART FOR MANY YEARS IN CIVIC AFFAIRS

    William H. Weibeler. Belle Plaine's pioneer merchant and leading figure in the public life of the community for fifty-four years, died at 3:10 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 27. Death was due to old age infirmities, his age being 83 years, 8 months and 21 days.
    Since the past year he has been gradually failing in health, and for the past few weeks was unable to leave home. He was confined to his bed, however, but one day before he died.
    Mr. Weibeler was one of the outstanding figures of Belle Plaine, taking at all times a keen interest in everything that related to the welfare of the community. He came here in 1869, and for a few years was a clerk in the store of A. V. Heyderstaedt. In 1872 he embarked in the mercantile business for himself and remained in this business until he sold out to Mr. Behnke in 1910.
    For many years he conducted our largest store and was widely known as a very successful merchant. He served as mayor, member of the borough council and of the school board, and an officer in our various civic and fraternal organizations.
    He was married here to Catherine Schmitt, daughter of the late Christian Schmitt, and to them eleven children were born, of whom two preceded him to his grave. His wife died in 1907. The surviving children are Gerhard H., Frank; Katherine and John of Belle Plaine; Peter H. of Devils Lake, N.D.; William M. of Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Clara Heywood of Minneapolis, Mrs. Angela Durrenberger of Perham, Dr. Christian Weibeler of Adrian. One sister survives him, Mrs. G. Hilgers of Jordan.
    Mr. Weibeler was a native of Germany, born in the city of Butzheim, and he came to this country in 1868, locating at Jordan. He moved to Belle Plaine the following year and remained here ever since.
    The funeral will be held Friday morning, with services at Sts. Peter and Paul's church at 9 o'clock.

    WILLIAM HUBERT WEIBLER

    On June 8, 1837 my great grandfather, Wilhelm Hubert Weipler, was born in Butzheim Germany, a small town with a population of five- hundred in the Rhine Province near Cologne. He was the only one out of a family of thirteen to leave Germany for the New World. It is possible that poverty in the family, due to his fathers handicap, delayed his departure until he was thirty. His father had lost an arm in the Napoleanic War. He left Germany in1867. While going through Customs, his first name was Americanized and his last name was misspelled, according to the way it sounded to the Custom's Officer. His new name was William Hubert Weibeler. From New York he set out for Chicago. To reach Chicago, he boarded a train whose cars closely resembled those used to transport cattle. According to my information, he remained in Chicago only short time. While there, he stayed with relatives or friends from his home town, "William," or "W.H.", as he would later come to be known. He was an ambitious man, however he decided to leave Chicago, despite the opportunities it held. It seemed that he preferred a small town much like Butzheim, to a city the size of Chicago. His dislike for large cities and perhaps Chicago in particular, was later to cost him and his heirs a fortune.

    After learning he had relatives living in Jordan, a small town in Minnesota, he made the long hard trip up the Mississippi River to St. Paul by riverboat, and then on to Jordan by stagecoach, or on the railroad which had just been completed. W. H. spent only a few days in Jordan visiting relatives because he soon found a job as a clerk, working for a Mr. Heyderstadt, a store owner from Belle Plaine, a small town seven miles away. Belle Plaine was very much like his home town in Germany. The population was around 497 when he arrived, but was to double within 25 years. He worked for Heyderstadt for only a few months. During this time he learned all he could about the operation of the store and about business in general. Heyderstadt's store was small, and there was much more to be learned at the large general store in the center of town, so he waited for an opening and then went to work for Jim Jordan as a clerk. Most of the men who came into the area were looking only for rich land along the Minnesota River to farm. Labor in town was at a premium, and anyone who was willing and available for steady work was paid a very livable wage. W. H. saved much of the money he made, and soon started looking for places to invest it. He bought tracts of land through out the town and in surrounding areas. By 1871, he opened up a confectionery in the front of the old Belle Plaine Hotel. Although he was still working for Mr. Jordan as an assistant or head clerk, his own small store was beginning to make him a reasonable profit. In 1872 he was approached by several other local business men for the purpose of buying land in the city of Chicago. A fire had recently swept through that city. W. H. rejected the idea. He did not think that a new city would be built over the site of the old one. A dislike for large cities may have also entered into his decision. Much of the profit he had made up to this time was on farm land in the area, so he invested his money in land in North Dakota instead. This land was to be sold later for nearly no profit at all.

    On May 5, 1873, W. H. married Catherine Schmitt, the daughter of a local brewery owner, Christian Schmitt. He and his new wife took an apartment in the hotel over his confectionery store where was now working full time. Two years later, in the summer of 1875, Jim Jordan's general store burned to the ground. Jordan decided not to rebuild. He sold the land to W. H., who built a small wooden frame structure to house his confectionery, which was now expanding into a general store. As his sales increased, he expanded the store by building a warehouse in back for storage. With the increased space he began to buy merchandise by the carload. Soon it became evident that the building that housed his store was far to small. In1882 he tore down the old wood structure and replaced it with a larger brick structure. His was the largest general store in a town, whose population was near seven hundred. The store was divided into three sections, each was completely separate from the other by a wall. In one section, he sold clothing, in another, groceries and in the third, hardware. The rear and second floor of the building were his living quarters. These quarters were very large and decorated lavishly. At the time they were built, he had three or four children. Because he expected his family to grow, his home was designed with seven bedrooms. This planning was to pay off, for he was to have eleven children in all. The first floor in the rear of the store held the dining room and the kitchen. Above the kitchen were the maids' quarters, which consisted of three bedrooms. W. H. needed a number of maids, because he fed the eighteen clerks who worked in his store dinner each working day. His dining room was two floors high and measured fifteen by thirty feet. The dining room table was five feet wide and long enough to seat twenty people. It was covered by a lace table cloth which extended over the table on all sides. The living room was on the second floor. It was larger than the dining room. Behind the living room were the seven bedrooms. W. H. had running cold water on the first floor. He accomplished this by running a pipe under the road to the municipal well, which was forty feet from the house. This well had a windmill pump and a twenty foot high water tower.

    The most unique aspect of his house was the large ballroom, which was adjacent to the living room. It was so large that it was sometimes used for basketball games. According to Harold Albrecht, the town historian, and author of several books about Belle Plaine, "Weibler Hall dates from the1870's". It was above the store owned by the same family. Up the stairs went crowds of Belle Plainites to the world of entertainment. These included home-talent plays, School entertainments, graduations, lectures, parish fairs, and dinners, wondering minstrel shows; even a Ringling Bros. Circus performance, athletic events, dances, masquerade balls--all the excitement in entertainment the town enjoyed.

    The same year he built the store, W. H. bought the Dakota House which contained a hotel, a bar, and a restaurant. This must have been a profitable venture, for information I have, speaks of local hotels filling up with new faces each night. These people were passing through in search of new land to farm. W. H. did not undertake the operation of this hotel, he instead hired others to run it for him. He did the same with a drug store he built next to his general store. On a lot behind the general store he built another hotel. The front of the building still bears the name Weibeler on a metal plaque. He sold a section of land near the general store to a brother-in law for use in establishing the first bank in Belle Plaine.

    W.H. was very much a part of life in Belle Plaine. The ways Weibeler Hall was used, shows he was culturally minded. This may have been spurred on by the pride he took in showing off his children's talents. He insisted that each one learn to play a musical instrument. A record of the school musical club in 1900, indicates that five of it's twelve members were his children. He was also involved in many of the town's civic enterprises. In 1896 he was elected Mayor. His campaign coincided with that of presidential hopeful, William Jennings Bryan. During his campaign Bryan made a train stop in Belle Plaine. Clara Weibeler, one of W. H.'s daughters, presented Bryan with a bouquet of flowers after his speech. W. H. was also a councilman, a member of the school board, and the River Commission. He was also one of the major contributors to the establishment of the Catholic Church, Sts. Peter and Paul. Those that remember him say that he and his family were almost always at church on Sunday. He would often invite friends over on Sunday by suggesting that they stop by on the way to church. He and his guests would then walk to church together. After the service they would then return home for a Sunday afternoon dinner. Although he was seldom late for mass, the priests had learned that they better not start the service without him. In the middle of the afternoon he would gather up his family and any lingering guests, and all would attend Benediction. When W. H. went to church, everyone went to church. William Hubert was literally the "Godfather" in Belle Plaine. He was present, in that capacity, for many of the christenings in town. He made one stipulation before he would consent to be the Godfather of a child. All of his godchildren had to take "Hubert" as their middle name. I have not been able to uncover the significance of this request. St. Hubert is the patron saint of dog-bite (hydrophobia) victims. Hydrophobia was greatly feared at that time.

    W.H. raised his children strictly, as was the custom of the times. Besides requiring training in the arts, he also insisted that each child receive a higher education. He sent all of his children to a college in the area. With the education they received at the University of Minnesota, St. John's, St. Benedict, and Mankato, many of his children were attracted by life and opportunities which existed outside of the boundaries of Belle Plaine.

    Kate was the only child to remain in Belle Plaine after her father's death in 1923. She continued to run the confectionery, which was a small part of the general store her father had established. In 1960, she closed the confectionery, and sold the entire building to the Coast to Coast Co. Today the building houses a hardware store, which is part of the Coast to Coast National chain. The living room and ballroom are used for storage, and the dining room, kitchen, and maid's quarters, all of which are in the rear of the building, are rented out as an apartment. Today, there are no Weibelers living in Belle Plaine. All the land and properties in and around town have been sold. The name of "Weibeler" is remembered only by those interested in the town's early history, or by those who frequented my aunt Kate's confectionery. The building bearing the Weibeler name, which W. H. had built as a hotel, is now a bar. While I was in Belle Plaine gathering information for this paper, I went into that bar. When I told the bartender that my great-grandfather had built the building, he appeared unimpressed, and responded with what I considered to be a disinterested "So"?

    Although the name of one of Belle Plaine's early founders is nearly forgotten, it's a name like many others that helped to build the towns, large and small, which sprang up during the frontier period of our country.

    In the Name of God, Amen

    I, William H. Weibeler of Belle Plaine in the County of Scott and State of Minnesota, being of sound mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore made, ordain and publish and declare this to be my last will and testament.

    First, I order and direct that my executors hereinafter named, pay all my just debts and funeral expenses as soon after my decease as conveniently may be out of the Life Ins. Policy of the German R. Catholic Benevolent Society of St. Paul.

    Second, after the payment of such funeral expenses and debts, then out of the rest of the money of said Ins. Policy shall be $100 paid to the parish priest of the St. Peter & Paul Church of Belle Plaine, Minn. for masses for the reposed of souls of my wife, my daughter Marie and myself, jointly. If there is some money on hand out of the above named Life Ins. Policy then shall be paid below named amounts to the children, what paid to my son Christian Weibeler Education at the University of Minnesota, as follows:

    1. To my son W.M. Weibeler for boarding him for 3 years at 9 months each year total 27 months at $15.00 a month - $405.00 with interest at 4 per cent from June 1, 1917.
    2. To my son Peter H. Weibeler for same purpose $115.00. Interest at 4% from June 1, 1917.
    3. To my daughter Katharine Weibeler for same purpose $100 Int. at 4% from June 1, 1917.
    4. To my daughter Clara Haywood, nee Weibeler, for same purpose $10.00 with interest at 4% from June 1, 1917.
    5. To my daughter Angela Durrenberger nee Weibeler, for same purpose $70.00 Int. at 4% from June 1, 1917.

    If there is a Bal of the above named policy named not in of the pay all of this, then to the other policy of Life Ins. shall cover the rest and the Bal of same shall be divided between the four youngest children. The stock of One Thousand ($1000.00) dollars in the First Nat. Bank of Belle Plaine, Minn. shall go to my son John Weibeler. I don’t think there be any debts when I shall leave this world, but there should be any, they should be paid out of the Life Ins. I also declare my estate shall be divided between my 9 children equal shares, after the respective amounts, what the other herein named children already have received the bal. of the children shall get first the equal amount what the others get, first out of my estate, then the remaining will then be equal divided between the 9 children.

    Now comes what the other children already received:

    1. My son G.H. Weibeler has a house and lots deeded to him in the amount of twelve hundred ($1200.00) Dollars.
    2. My son Frank Weibeler the sum of $1200.00 when he went into bankruptcy at Iona, Minn.
    3. My son Peter H. Weibeler the sum of twelve hundred ($1200.00) dollars when he went into bankruptcy and paid afterwards for him. I don’t hope, the selling of my property will be made in a hurry, as to receive a fair price for the Stores. The land and other lots will the administrators in consulting the other children sell as they see fit.

    I also have several shares in a mining company in the State of Washington, of this I give first to my son W.M. Weibeler 250 shares, my daughter Clara Heywood born Weibeler 250 shares, my daughter Angela Durrenberger nee Weibeler 500 shares, my son John Weibeler and also Christian J. Weibeler each 500 shares, then the Bal. of the shares of said mining company shall be divided equally between the 9 children.

    Have also a mining stock in Colorado, but don’t know much about this, but these shall also go to my son John, and Christian J. Weibeler, to each 500 shares, and the bal. to be divided equal again, should there be any dividend declared by the Mining Co. shall be divided equal as per shares.

    Have also a note & a transfer of an Ins. Policy on the life of M.F. Foley. Should Mrs. Foley or any of their heirs pay of the Note then executors will sign over the Note & Policy. If M.P. Foley is dead then the executor shall get the note paid and if there is a Bal. to pay same to Mrs. Foley of their heirs and the proceeds of the note shall be divided equally. To repeat my intention, the amount paid to the 3 oldest boys already, the same amount must be first paid out of any money coming in to the 6 remaining children.

    The Datmor Piano shall belong to the 3 girls, and they may agree between themselves who will have it, and they must pay the other 2 girls $75.00 each. I also give the 3 girls the silverware, and to Katherine all the Chinaware. My Life Ins. Policy of the G.R.C. Benevolent Society is signed to my son G.H. Weibeler, but the intention what shall be done with the money is herein clear and stated, and agreed by him.

    Lastly, I make, constitute and appoint my sons, G.H. Weibeler and W.M. Weibeler to be executors of this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

    Seldom has a death in the community aroused such a universal concern. Through a long and lingering illness, the family and friends were somewhat prepared for this end, yet hope for recovery had never ceased and the shock of death was keenly felt by the sorrowing family and wide circle of friends.
    She was the daughter of the late Christian Schmitt and was born in Doerbach, Germany, June 6, 1852. She came with her parents to this country in 1867, and after staying for a short while in Chicago, came to Belle Plaine in the same year.
    In 1873 she was married to William H. Weibeler. Eleven children were born to them, of whom ten are living; namely, Gerhard H., Miss Mayme, Frank, Peter, Miss Katherine, William, Miss Clara, Miss Angela, John and Christian. Besides her husband and children, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. S. Bowler, of Denver, Colo., and two brothers, Jacob and Matt Schmitt of Belle Plaine.
    The floral offerings were the largest and most beautiful ever seen here. Various local societies, businessmen's organizations and private individuals presented a wealth of flowers.
    During the funeral which was held on Wednesday morning, all places of business and the public school was closed. The funeral was the largest that has ever been witnessed in Belle Plaine. St. Peter and Paul's church was crowded as it has never been, and the occasion of the burial of this most esteemed woman brought so many here from abroad that the number of visitors, it would seem, was the greatest that had ever gathered here. The widespread interest and sympathy expressed in the death of Mrs. Weibeler by this great concourse of people represents the degree in which she was beloved and to which the knowledge of her beautiful personality had spread.
    A solemn requiem mass was celebrated with Father Raymond as the celebrant. Father Guido, O. F. M., of Chaska; Father Rufinius, O. F. M., of Waconia; Father Suitbertus, O. F. M. of St. Benedict; and Father Herbert O. F. M., of Union Hill, occupied places in the sanctuary. Father Raymond preached the funeral sermon.
    Among the many who came to the funeral were Mrs. S. Bowler, of Denver, Col., Mr. and Mrs. H. Theviot, of Brainerd; Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Hilgers, of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nicolin, Mrs. John Bailey and Joe Schmitt of St. Paul; Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Gericke, of Lake Mills, Wis.; Peter and Matt Monzel, of Webster, S. D. The number from the neighboring places of Jordan, Shakopee, Henderson, LeSueur, Green Isle, Norwood and numerous other adjoining localities was very large.

    INTERESTING AFFAIR BEAUTIFULLY CARRIED OUT

    Miss Angela Weibeler, daughter of W.H. Weibeler, and Mr. John Durrenberger of St. Paul, were united in marriage at Sts. Peter and Paul's church Wednesday morning, Rev. John Curry officiating.

    Miss Helen Weibeler were maid of honor, and Ray Durrenberger was best man. The other attendants of the bridal party were Miss Mary Durrenberger and Miss Clara Townsend, and Messrs. Christian Weibeler and Nicholas Schons.

    The bride was attired in a gown of bride's satin trimmed with Spanish lace and fur with full court train, the veil caught with orange blossoms and carried a shower bouquet of roses and lilies of the valley. The bride's maids were attired in yellow crepe de chene and carried pink roses.

    A wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride's father for the immediate relatives. The rooms were decorated beautifully with oak leaves and yellow chrysanthemums.

    After an extended wedding trip through the northern part of the state, Mr. and Mrs. Durrenberger will be at home in Wadena.

    Mrs. J.G. Durrenberger
    Mrs. John G. (M. Angela) Durrenberger, 82, a resident of the Pine Edge Inn, Little Falls, died Saturday afternoon in St. Gabriel's Hospital. She was born Sept. 5, 1891, in Belle Plaine, Minn., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Weibeler. She attended Mankato Teachers College, and had taught in New Prague. She married John G. (Jack) Durrenberger, Oct. 20, 1914, and they had lived in Wadena and in Perham most of their married life. They came to Little Falls in 1945, operated the West Side Clothing Store for a number of years, and had lived here ever since. She was a member of the Christian Mothers, in Perham, and of St. Gabriel's Hospital Auxiliary.
    Mrs. Durrenberger is survived by her husband; four sons and one daughter: Maj. Gen (Ret.) William J. Durrenberger, Des Moines, Iowa; Dr. Robert W., Phoenix, Ariz.; James F., Golita, Calif.; John A., Valparaiso, Fla., and Mrs. Warren (Patricia) Gordon Jr., Little Falls; also 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A brother, Dr. C.J. Weibeler, lives in Adrian, Minn.
    Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Requiem Mass concelebrated by Rev. John Laky and Rev. Adrian Tirbak. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been made at the Simonet Funeral Home, where calling hours begin today at 4 p.m. The parish prayer services will be held there at 8 p.m., and the Knights of Columbus will pray the Office of the Dead at 8:30 p.m. today.

    Perham's Class of 1935 to Have Two Generals
    Col. William J. Durrenberger, 48, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Durrenberger of Perham, has been nominated by President Johnson for promotion to the rank of brigadier general. Col. Durrenberger is commander of the Tank Automotive Center, Warren, Michigan.

    He becomes the second member of the Perham High School class of 1935 to attain the rank of general, joining Brig. Gen. Oaul A. Feyereisen.

    Biography
    Born in Wadena, Minnesota, on 15 March 1917, William J. Durrenberger graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1940 and was commissioned through ROTC. He then volunteered for active duty and trained at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, in ammunition manufacturing, followed by duty from 1940 to 1942 as Property and Transportation Officer at the Elwood Ordnance Plant in Illinois, a shell and bomb loading, assembly, and packing plant.
    Following automotive maintenance training at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, and tank maintenance training at Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois Durrenberger next served in 1943 as Tank Maintenance and Repair Officer at the Red River Ordnance Depot, Texas. Later that year overseas service followed as a Technical Intelligence Officer in the European Theater, specializing in German and Italian combat vehicles. He returned to the United States in 1947 to serve in the Office of the Chief of Ordnance (OCO) in Washington, D.C., first as guided Missile and Rocket Design and Development Officer then, from 1948 to 1951, as Technical Operations Officer, Rocket Branch.
    Durrenberger continued his association with the Ordnance Department's burgeoning missile program, which increasingly centered on Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, where he reported for duty in 1951 as Director of Projects, responsible for coordinating the growing number of guided missile and rocket programs. In 1952 he was assigned as Assistant Director of the Ordnance Missile Laboratories at Redstone, an organization he helped create.
    Durrenberger's range of talents continued to grow. Earning a Master's of Business Administration from Syracuse University in 1954, he returned to OCO to serve as Technical Director, Financial Management System Office, and then as Executive Officer in the Comptroller Office. In 1956 he returned to Redstone Arsenal as Chief of the Financial Management Office, Army Ballistic Missile Agency. With the establishment of the U.S. Army Ordnance Missile Command at Redstone in 1958, he was assigned as its Comptroller.
    Following graduation from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1960, Durrenberger's career took yet another turn when he joined the J-4 Division (Logistics) of the joint United Nations and US Forces Command Korea as Chief, Logistic Plans Branch. In 1961 he returned to the United States to serve as Deputy Commandant, Ordnance Weapons Command, Rock Island, Illinois, and then as Chief of Staff when that organization was redesignated the US Army Weapons Command under the newly established Army Materiel Command.
    In 1963 Durrenberger took command of the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts, where he was responsible for developing or improving a wide range of small arms, to include the M14 rifle and M60 machine gun. In 1965 he assumed command of the Army Tank-Automotive Center in Warren, Michigan then returned to Rock Island in 1966 as Commanding General of the US Army Weapons Command. He assumed his last active duty position in 1968 as Assistant Chief of Staff, G-4, later redesignated Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics, at Headquarters US Army Pacific. MG Durrenberger retired in 1970 after 30 years of distinguished service. He died on 11 June 2002 in Aurora, Illinois.

    William John Durrenberger, 85, of the 2700 block of Lynner Drive died of a heart ailment Tuesday at McAuley Manor in Aurora, Ill. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Basilica of St. Johns, of which he was a member. Entombment will be at Merle Hay Mausoleum.

    Mr. Durrenberger was born in Wadena, Minn., and had lived in Des Moines since 1970. He was a retired career Army officer and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knights of Columbus.

    He is survived by three sons, William Jr. of Sugar Grove, Ill., Robert of San Diego and Phillip of Des Moines a brother, Robert of Arizona and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma.

    Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Merle Hay Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to his church.

    On Saturday, September 29, 1984 in Munich, West Germany; John A. Durrenberger of Arlington, Va., beloved father of Diane Levy, Thomas E. and Alan A. Durrenberger; he is also survived by three brothers; one sister; and one grandson. Graveside service at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, October 11 at 1 pm. Arrangements by Arlington Funeral Home.

    John A. Durrenberger, 64, a retired civilian operations analyst with the Air Force who was a senior staff member of the Institute for Defense Analyses for nine years before retiring a second time in August 1984, died Sept. 29 at a hotel in Munich after a heart attack.

    A resident of Arlington since 1975, he was vacationing in Europe when he was stricken.

    Mr. Durrenberger was a native of Minnesota and earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Minnesota. He served on active Navy duty during World War II and retired from the Reserves in 1980 with the rank of commander.

    He joined the Air Force Department in the 1940s. He held posts at its tactical warfare center, at its headquarters in Europe and at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, where he retired in 1975. He joined IDA when he moved to the Washington area.

    His marriages to the former Erlene Bailey and the former Karleen Milnick ended in divorce.

    Survivors include three children by his first marriage, Diane Levy of Fort Myers, Fla., Thomas E., of Niceville, Fla., and Alan A., of Orlando, Fla.; three brothers, retired Army Maj. Gen. William Durrenberger of Des Moines, Dr. Robert Durrenberger of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jim Durrenberger of Goleta, Calif.; a sister, Patricia Gordon of Tampa, Fla., and one grandchild.

    Robert W. Durrenberger, 94, of Sun City, Arizona, passed away on October 20, 2012.

    Robert was born in Perham, Minnesota to John and Angela Durrenberger. He served his country during WWII in the United States Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged as a Major.

    Bob studied at Moorhead State University, Cal Tech and earned his MA from the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D from UCLA.

    He was a College Professor for the University of Kentucky, then at Cal State Northridge. In 1971, he and his family moved to Arizona where he became a full time professor of Geography at Arizona State University. While there, he established the Arizona State Climate Office

    In retirement, Bob enjoyed golfing with friends, playing bridge and life at Royal Oaks Retirement Community.

    He is preceded in death by his son, Dan Durrenberger. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Bernadine A. Durrenberger and his daughter, Mary Ann Marasco and her husband, Mike, 3 grandchildren, Dylan Marasco, Amy Armstrong (Patrick) and Kristen Gowen-MacDonald (William), and 2 beautiful great grandchildren, Emily and Taylor Armstong.

    DURRENBERGER, James F.
    1/1/23 - 9/15/00. James F. Durrenberger was born on January 1, 1923 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was one of 5 children born to Angela & Jack Durrenberger. Jim graduated from Perham High School an attended the University of Minnesota. Following military service in the Medical Corps in WW II he joined General Motors and retired in 1987. He enjoyed his retirement years doing volunteer work for St. Marks Parish and Catholic Charities, traveling with his wife June of 45 years and their daily walks with 'Pierre'.

    Jim is survived by his wife June, daughters Sally Williamson and Judy Durrenberger, son Paul Durrenberger, son in law Rick Williamson, and granddaughters Holly and Natalie Williamson. Jim was devoted to charitable causes, his family, and church. He loved to be with children and animals. We will miss his sense of humor, letters to the editor, and his constant loving support.

    Masses will be said in behalf of Jim Durrenberger at St Marks and St Rafaels Catholic churches. A private memoriam will be held for the immediate family members later this week. In lieu of flowers please send donations to St Marks Catholic Church in Jim Durrenberger's name.
