    Obituary
    Obituary of Mathias Schmitt
Belle Plaine Herald, January 23, 1936
MATT SCHMITT DIED TUESDAY END CAME AT HOSPITAL--FUNERAL ON FRIDAY.
One of our old time residents and prominent businessman of earlier years died this week in the person of Matt Schmitt. He passed away on Tuesday afternoon at the St. Cloud hospital where he had been taken just a week before.
Deceased was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Schmitt. He was born in Germany 76 years ago and was seven years old when he came to this country with his parents, the family coming direct to Belle Plaine. The elder Schmitt founded the Belle Plaine Brewery, and upon his death his son Matt carried on the business, which was a flourishing local industry for a long period. It was discontinued before the advent of prohibition, and for the past twenty years deceased had been retired from active business affairs.
Surviving him are seven children; namely, Christian, Urban, Gerold, Mildred (Sister Bernal), Helen (Mrs. Milton Norman), Rose (Mrs. Ressner Nelson), and Kathryn. His wife died 25 years ago. Matt Schmitt was the last of the Christian Schmitt family. The remains were brought to the home of Mrs. G. H. Weibeler and the funeral will be held Friday morning with services at Sts. Peter and Paul's church at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
