Obituary of Bertha Schmitt
Belle Plaine Herald, June 15, 1911
DEATH OF A YOUNG MOTHER. MRS. BERTHA SCHMITT, WIFE OF MATT SCHMITT, IS CALLED TO ANOTHER WORLD. END CAME ON SATURDAY AND FUNERAL HELD THE FOLLOWING MONDAY FORENOON.
An unusually sad event is to be recorded this week in the death of Mrs. Bertha Schmitt. the young wife of Matt Schmitt. The end came on Saturday, June 10th, after an illness of two weeks, in which everything possible was done to save her life but to no avail.
Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schmitt and was born in Belle Plaine Nov. 1, 1881. She grew up in the community and never lived apart from it. Nine years ago her marriage to Matt Schmitt took place and seven children have been born to them, four boys and three girls, the oldest only 8 years last month and the youngest a baby two weeks old.
The funeral was held on Monday from St. Peter and Paul's church. Rev. Father Germain officiated at the last rites and preached a beautiful and touching sermon. The funeral was very largely attended, and those from a distance who were present were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rohweder, Albert Schmitt's sister, Frank Monzel and Jos. Schmitt, from St. Paul; J. N. Schram, of Green Isle; Jos. Conter, of Shakopee; Mrs. P. J. Schmitt and Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Weibeler, of Jordan; Mr. and Mrs. Constantine Thill and Mrs. Casper Verkinnes and sons William and Henry, of Carver. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved husband, parents and the many motherless little children.

Obituary
Obituary of Margareta Becker
Belle Plaine Herald, January 14, 1909
DEATH OF MRS. JACOB SCHMITT WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF BELLE PLAINE PASSES AWAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS. CAME HERE A CHILD 52 YEARS AGO FUNERAL HELD ON WEDNESDAY AND WAS LARGELY ATTENDED BY OLD FRIENDS
Mrs. Jacob Schmitt died at her home in this Borough on Sunday forenoon, Jan. 10, 1909, of Brights Disease after an illness of several months. In her death the community lost one of its most highly esteemed members, and the family a devoted mother. Her age was 53 years.
She was born in Buffalo, N. Y., July 27, 1855, and came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Becker to Belle Plaine in 1857. Here she was married to Jacob Schmitt, and Belle Plaine remained her home through all her remaining years. She was the mother of fourteen children, of whom eleven are living; namely, Chris. L., of Waubay, S. D.; Peter J., of Jordan; Mrs. F. Monzel, of St. Paul; Mrs. F. J. Gericke, of Lake Mills, Wisc.; William and Joseph of Delano; John, Lizzie, Alma, Clara and Angela who reside at home. She also leaves twenty grandchildren and four sisters, Mrs. Jos. Albrecht, Sr., Mrs. Jos. Albrecht, Jr.,and Mrs. Chris. Albrecht of Belle Plaine, and Mrs. Martin Imhoff, of St. Paul; and one brother, Frank Becker, of California.
Her death is a very sad one for the sorrowing husband and children, several of whom are quite small and are now deprived of a mothers care and watchfulness. She was ever a devoted helpmate to her husband, and in his declining years with his own health broken by the effects of rheumatism her loss is sorely felt. The funeral was held on Wednesday morning from Sts. Peter and Paul's church, and was under the auspices of St. Anna Society, of which she was a member. Rev. Father Germain performed the last rites and preached the funeral sermon.
Among those present from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Martin Imhoff and Mrs, Frank Monzel, of St. Paul; Mrs. F. J. Greicke, of Lake Mills, Wisc.; Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Schmitt, of Jordan; C. L. Schmitt, of Waubay, S. D.; J. N. Schram, of Green Isle, and Mr. Schrams sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Schuh, of Milwaukee, Wisc.

Note
Hubert Schmitt, a German immigrant, worked as a blacksmith at the Lower Sioux Agency.
The morning of August 18, 1862, the Dakota Indians launched their Uprising against the government employees and traders at the Lower Sioux Agency. The Dakota were frustrated with their situation for a variety of reasons. Hubert and some of his family were able to escape the Dakota's attack, but apparently one or two of his children were taken captive. They were released with the rest of the prisoners on September 26, 1862, after the Uprising had been put down. Hubert and the other members of his family made it to Fort Ridgely, where they remained for several weeks, weathering two attacks on the fort by the Dakota.
On August 31, Hubert was a member of the Joseph R. Brown burial party sent out by Colonel Henry Sibley, to bury the white victims in Renville County and at the Lower Sioux Agency. Hubert probably accompanied the party in order to try to find out what had happened to his two missing children. The party camped at Birch Coulee the night of September 1, and just before daybreak the next morning, the Dakota attacked. They took the 170 members of the burial party completely by surprise, and, as a result, badly mauled them. Hubert likely died on September 2.
His story is told on page 34 of "Dakota Uprising Victims: Gravestones & Stories," published in 2007 by Curtis Dahlin. The inscription on Hubert's gravestone reads "H. Schmitt, Shot at the Battle of Burch Cooley, Sept. 22, 1862, Aged 30 Years." Note the spelling or Birch Coulee, and also note that the date, Sept. 22, is in error, as a September 6 entry in the St. Paul Daily Press noted his death.
