Obituary
Excerpts from the obituary of Henry Richard
Chewelah Independent
The community was shocked Monday to learn that Henry Richard had died at 4:00 o'clock that morning from a heart attack. Mr. Richard had been in good health Sunday, and spent the day at the family cabin at Waitts Lake, and with his son.
Richard had gone fishing in the afternoon. He became ill during the night, and at 1:30 o'clock was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he passed away two and a half hours later.
Mr. Richard was born at Little Falls, Minnesota, February 4, 1883. He attended the grade and high schools there, and later was graduated from the University of Minnesota.
He married Lucy Bourassa at Little Falls in 1908. The family came to Chewelah in 1914, when Mr. Richard purchased a drug store here, which was named Richard Drug Co. Previously they had spent 5 years at Cashmere, Wash., after coming west, and where Mr. Richard operated a drug store.
Mr. Richard was a talented violinist, and was frequently called upon for violin solos at civic and social affairs, although he had not played much the last few years.
Obituary of Henry Richard
Little Falls Transcript, Little Falls, MN, August 17, 1945
HENRY RICHARD

Mr. Richard, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Richard, received a degree in pharmacy at the University of Minnesota and had operated a drug store in the west for many years.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lucy Bourassa, two daughters and two sons. Also, surviving are three sisters, Mrs. William Darling, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. John Christianson and Mrs. Ed. Burr, Spokane, Wash.; a brother, Irving, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Lionel, Chewelah. Another brother, Leo, preceded him in death five weeks ago.
Biography
A newspaper clipping found in Lucy Bourassa's bible reads:
RICHARD-BOURASSA
Miss Lucy Bourassa Becomes Bride of Henry Richard Monday Morning
The French Catholic church was the scene of a pretty wedding Monday morning when Henry J. Richard married Miss Lucy Bourassa, Rev. Fr. Lamothe officiating.
The bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Bourassa and has always lived in this city. She is a charming and accomplished young lady. She is a graduate of the local high school with the class of 1906.
The groom has lived in this city most of his life but at the present is located in the state of Washington, having charge of a drug store. He is a member of the class of 1904 of the department of pharmacy at the University of Minnesota.
The bride was gowned in a tan traveling suit and carried no flowers. She was attended by her sister, Miss Flora Bourassa, who wore a dress of banana fallow taffeta. Lionel Richard, a brother to the groom, acted as best man.
After the ceremony had been performed the bridal party retired to the home of the bride's parents on Seventh street northeast where a sumptuous wedding breakfast was served to the immediate relatives of the happy couple.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard left Monday afternoon for Minneapolis where they will spend a short honeymoon after which they will return to this city before leaving for Washington where they will make their home. The bride was the recipient of many beautiful gifts."

Biography
Uncle Dick, as I knew him, and Aunt Mayme, lived about three blocks from our home in Chewelah. My father, Henry, first came to Chewelah and bought a drug store, calling it, appropriately, Richard Drug. Some years later, his brother, Dick, joined him in Chewelah and Dick opened a hardware, called Chewelah Hardware. The two stores were just one block apart.
I remember working for my Dad in the drug store until about the age of 13, for 10 cents/hour. That was plus everything I could eat in the soda fountain and all the comic books I could read. I went to work for my Uncle Dick in the hardware store for 25 cents/hour but no fringe benefits. My Aunt Mayme also worked there, and she saw to it that whenever I was not busy in the hardware section, I would dust shelves in the glassware and nicknack section of the store. They were very close to my parents and to me all those years when I was growing up.
