    Obituary
Star Tribune: Newspaper of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis, MN) - March 22, 1997

George Durenberger dies at age 90. He served as the athletic director at St. John's University for 41 years.

George Durenberger first visited St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., in 1924 when he enrolled as a freshman. He was still there nearly five decades later - after a career of playing, coaching and promoting athletics and physical fitness.

Durenberger, 90, the school's athletic director for 41 years, died Thursday in St. Cloud. He was the father of David Durenberger, former U.S. senator from Minnesota.

The elder Durenberger wore a variety of hats at the school, many simultaneously. As a player, he was the school's first athlete to be named all-conference for three years in football, and lettered four years in basketball.

After graduating, he became head basketball coach, an assistant in football and a staff member of the Liturgical Press. At age 25 he was named athletic director while also acting as head coach at various times in football, basketball and track. He also taught physical education courses and was an English and business instructor at St. John's prep school.

He also found time to get a master's degree from the University of Minnesota and serve in civic and church organizations.

In the late 1950s he was a member of the state advisory committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, the President's White House Youth Commission and the Governor's Committee on Physical Fitness.

"He was one of the first to advocate physical fitness for all students, not just the ballplayers," said his wife, Isabelle. "He was always saying, 'A healthy body promotes a healthy mind.' And he promoted physical fitness for the women at St. Ben's, too." The College of St. Benedict is a companion school to St. John's. Durenberger and his wife spent much of their time in Florida after he retired in 1972.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, David, of Minneapolis and Washington, D.C.; George Mark, of Eden Prairie, and Thomas, of Cottage Grove; two daughters, Constance Kneip, of Sussex, Wis., and Mary McLeod, of Dallas; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Abbey Church in Collegeville, with visitation at 9 a.m.

    Note
William's occupation was noted as surveyor and auctioneer in Gatehouse of Fleet. In the Supplemental Volume to the "Dictionary of Land Surveyors and Local cartographers of Great Britain and Ireland 1550-1850, edited by Peter Eden (William Dawson & Sons, Folkstone), a copy of which was reviewed at the West Register House in Edinburgh, the entry for William Gordon reads as follows:

GORDON, W. 18(? 25)- 33, STF; mineral; in High Street, Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Kirkcudbright, civil and mineral engineer; pupil of Adam McPhail."
The entry for Adam McPhail states: "1804-29; STF; of Newcastle-under-Lyme; at one time professor of mathematics at a military academy, London; trained W. Gordon."

The West Register House also contains an extensive collection of old surveys which are indexed by surveyor. Only one survey, as of July 1992, was listed for William (RHP 13036-1861) and it is titled "Topographical Plans of Cally, Coppicewood, Alphabetically Arranged - 1861, Enlarged from the Ordinance Survey by W. Gordon". This volume was checked out and reviewed by this researcher.

In the 1851 census of Woodhead, Parish of Anwoth, Kirkcudbrightshire, William is listed as "Surveyor, Auctioneer, Land Agent and caretaker of 220 Acres employing 6 laborers."

McConchie passed the property to James Gordon in Bar of Bagbie, in life rent and from him to William Gordon (his son) in Woodhead in fee.
  • 1850~45
    Note
In a booklet titled "Gatehouse Memories" edited by George McCulloch for the Gatehouse of Fleet Community Council Bicentenary Committee - 1995, there is an article on page 2 titled "The Old Pub Scene in Gatehouse of Fleet Circa 1850". The article stated that in 1850 the population of Gatehouse was about 1,920 and it had about 20 pubs in the village. One pub called "The Commercial" was owned by William Gordon (an auctioneer) and Dalziel and James Wilson.

Another memory on page 13 titled "Twa Galloway Ponies...." read as follows:
"John Hall, druggist and William Gordon, auctioneer, were members of the Galloway Rifle Corps at the time of the great Edinburgh Review in 1861. As the two of them were proceeding along Princess Street an old woman, seeing them, cried out, "Oh there are twa Galloway ponies anyway; anyone can tell them easily: short p' the legs and gie near the grun".

    Obituary
    Obituary of James McKean
Galloway Advertiser and the Wigtown Free Press, Wigtown, Scotland, August 14, 1879

"Mr James M'Kean, Provost of Gatehouse, died suddenly last week. Mr. M'Kean was long in business in England, and having acquired a fortune he retired and came to reside in his native town, where he was much respected. He took an interest in all municipal and local government affairs about Gatehouse, and was an elder in the Free Church."

In a second obituary in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard dated 13 August 1879, it stated:

"Having served his apprenticeship as a joiner he went in early life to Manchester and worked there for many years as a journeyman. By dint of steady application and native energy he was admitted a partner of the firm of Hay, McNish and McKean, contractors and was able, while still a comparatively young man to retire upon a competency."

In the 1881 Census, two years after his death, his home at Braeside in Gatehouse of Fleet is now occupied by three (Mc)Nish children, Mary (10), Alexander (9), and Charlotte (7). The head of the household is listed as Margaret Oldfield, a housekeeper born in England. All the (Mc)Nish children were born in England.
