    Biography

This item is extracted from a book Portrait and Biographical Record of Denver and Vicinity, Colorado, published in 1898, from the section on Larimer County.

JOHN McNEY, of Livermore, Larimer County, Colorado (and Kirkmabreck)

JOHN McNEY, of Livermore, Larimer County, Colorado, has lived a life of excitement and adventure that has been equalled by few men. For many years he engaged in hauling freight for the government to western posts, during which time he took part in many encounters with the Indians, and it was his privilege at one time to save a mother and three children from becoming their victims. He was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, and is the son of John and Isabelle (Muir) McNey, and a grandson of David McNey, who died in Scotland, where he had been engaged in agriculture. His father was born in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, but moved to Sheffield, England, where he was a dry-goods merchant for a time, but finally returned to his old home and took up the occupation of a farmer and stockman, continuing in this business until his death, which occurred in his forty-seventh year. He married Miss Isabelle Muir, who was born at the same place, and whose father, James Muir, was a farmer. She died when sixty-five years old. Of her thirteen children four are now in America. Those living are: James, in New Zealand; Mary, in Ontario, Canada; William, who lives in the same place; Margaret, in New York City; Jessie Dudley, in England; and John, our subject.

John McNey was educated in the national schools of Scotland, and when about sixteen years of age went to Wallsall, England, where he was apprenticed in the dry-goods business for two or three years. About 1856, during the Crimean war, he came to America in a sailing vessel, the "Benjamin Adams." He located in South Carolina and accepted a clerkship, later returned to New York and secured a position in the upholstery department of the dry-goods store of A. T. Stewart. Afterwards he clerked in James Gray Company's lace house. During the war he volunteered in the Seventy-ninth Regiment, but they were disbanded, owing to some disagreement. He went to Orange County, N. Y., and then to New York City, where he occupied his old place nearly all through the war. For some time he worked in a grocery store in Galesburg, Ill., and then went to Fort Leavenworth, Kan. In 1867 he joined a government train, engaging to drive a six-mule team through to its destination.

This was the time of Custer's first expedition, and they had a fight with the Indians at Stormy Hollow, on the Smoky Hill route, in which three men were killed, and the seven leading wagons, with twenty mules, were carried off by the red men. It was here he was given the opportunity to rescue the woman and her three children from the blood-thirsty wretches. The Indians and their captives, who were a soldier's wife and children, were running near a gulch, and Mr. NcNey undertook the task of rescuing them unaided. He crawled down the gulch and shot, wounding one of the Indians, who returned his fire, without hitting him, and then ran off, leaving their captives behind. On different occasions he buried the dead after skirmishes. He continued to haul goods from Ellsworth to Forts Hayes, Zerah and Wallace. He was thus employed during the summer and fall, and after the treaty with the Indians hauled supplies to Medicine Lodge, Kan. He then returned to Leavenworth and received his discharge. In 1868 he drove an ox-train to Colorado. Fifty wagons were ordered from Ellsworth to Cheyenne, and there loaded for Port Bridger and Camp Douglass. This trip took all summer, but no serious trouble with the Indians occurred. The following year he left Fort Bridger and hauled government supplies for Colonel Bracket to Fort Ellis, at the head of the Missouri River. The Indians were troublesome at this place also. He then returned to Fort Bridger and sold the outfit to a contractor near Salt Lake, while he remained at the fort in charge of the cattle. He finally sold out to the government and returned to Leavenworth. In 1875 he crossed the plains with cattle and teams, his wife driving a team, intending to cross the "Divide" to Snake River. When they reached Livermore Park they were caught in the snow and had to turn their cattle out and winter there. They then decided to locate there, and he secured employment with N. C. Alford for a couple of years. He then pre-empted one hundred and sixty acres near the post-office, which he sold a year later, and settled on his present farm, one hundred and sixty acres, at the head of Livermore Park. He proved his claim, improved and added to it, until he now has two hundred and forty acres, fenced and in a good state of cultivation. The fine springs on the ground make it an especially desirable place, and here he raises cattle and horses, making it a profitable business.

Mr. McNey married Miss Frances Stewart in Leavenworth in 1875. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and was a daughter of John W. Stewart, of Indianapolis. Her grandfather, Charles Stewart, was born in Kentucky, but moved first to Indiana, and later to Des Moines, Iowa, where he settled his four sons on a quarter-section of land. One of these sons was her father, who afterward moved to Leavenworth, Kan. Her great-grandfather, Charles Stewart, was of Scotch parentage, while on her mother's side she was of Irish origin. Her mother, Mary Boyle, was born in Indianapolis, where her grandfather Boyle conducted a shoemaking shop. The mother died in Leavenworth, leaving five children, four of whom are living, as follows; Frances, now Mrs. McNey; Josephine, Parrott and Elmer, all of Leavenworth. Mr. and Mrs. McNey have three children: Stewart, Walter and John, Jr. Mr. McNey organized school district No. 28, and was first treasurer of the board, while his wife was secretary for ten years. He built the first school house, and has given valuable aid to the cause of education in this section. He also did much toward making the roads, and was overseer of the same for more than sixteen years. In politics he is a Republican. Both he and his estimable wife have many friends.

    Obituary
    Obituary of William McNay

    Huron Expositor

    Death of Mr. McNay.

A somewhat remarkable career was terminated on Monday last by the death of Mr. William McNay of Tuckersmith. Mr. McNay passed from life at his home on the second concession of Tuckersmith, west of Egmondville on Monday afternoon after a short illness, having reached the age of 72 years and closing a career, the experience of which would make an interesting volume.
Mr. McNay was a native of Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, and was born near Creetown. He came to New York when only 17 years of age. After remaining there for a time he went to Charleston, South Carolina where he engaged in the dry goods business. He spent eight years in Charleston, when the war broke out. He joined the Southern Army under General Buregard and took part in the bombardment of Fort Sumpter.
After three months in the service he enlisted as a seaman and was on the first vessel that cleared the blockade and reached Liverpool carrying Confederate colors, where a salute was fired by a British man of war, Mr. McNay placing the flag aloft. After spending a short time in Liverpool, he returned to New York, remaining about a year, when he went west to Illinois, where he remained until the close of the war, running the risk of two drafts into the Northern Army.
He returned again to New York where he spent two years. In 1860 he came to the Huron tract to visit friends here and spent his first winter with Mr, John Logan in his store in Egmondville. The following summer he spent with the late William McConnell on the farm and the following winter he spent with friends in Huron township, Bruce county. He again returned to Illinois and spent three years there.
In 1866 he returned to Huron and was married to Jane Ramsay, eldest daughter of the late Peter Ramsay of Tuckersmith. With his young bride he settled in the township of Ashfield, on a bush farm near Lucknow. Here he envinced the same pluck and energy he had displayed in his former enterprises and by dint of industry and good management soon converted the forest farm into a beautiful and comfortable home for himself and family.
He continued to reside in Ashfield until 1893, when he purchased the old Ramsay homestead in Tuckersmith where he continued to reside until his death, though his eldest son still resides on the homestead in Ashfield.
Mr. McNay was in many respects a remarkable man. He had seen a great deal of life and being a keen observer, was a most entertaining and companionable gentleman. He was shrewd in business, of sterling character and gentlemanly and courteous in manner. While he took an intelligent interest in all public affairs, he never aspired to public position. Had he done so, his experience and business ability would have been of much public service.
He leaves a widow and family of two sons and two daughters to mourn his loss and cherish the memory of a kind husband and worthy father. The sons are Peter of Ashfield and John at home; and the daughters are Mrs. William Johnston, of Lucknow and Elizabeth Jane at home. The remains were laid to rest in the Maitlandbank cemetery on Thursday.
  • 1905~71
    Burial
He was buried in Apr 1905 in the Maitlandbank CemeteryG, in Seaforth, Huron, Ontario, CanadaG.

Peter Gordon. Knox County is the abiding place of many citizens, for innate worth and native force of character, are a credit to her, and prominent among these may be found a gentleman of whom we write, a retired farmer, living on section 12, of Copley Township. He stands high in the community as a man of solid and substantial character, and holds different offices in his township, having been Road Commissioner for some length of time, and is a School Director, laboring faithfully in the interests of education.

Mr. Gordon was born in Creetown, Scotland, May 19, 1810. His parents were James and Jane (Heron) Gordon, both of Scotland. They were farmers by occupation, and their family consisted of four children – Peter, Margaret, Alex. and David. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon died in 1854 and 1857 respectively.

The subject of our narrative spent the years of his life up to his majority on the home farm, and attended school. In 1840 he emigrated to America with the high hopes and eager ambition of early youth, with the one idea of making himself a name and a home. Landing in New York, he came by way of the lakes to Chicago. From that city he came to Knox County and settled in section10, of Copley Township. Here he purchased 40 acres of prairie land, on which he built a log house 16 x 20 feet, and there he lived for six years. To his first purchase he added by degrees 560 acres, and continued to reside on this until 1885. He has at present time 890 acres of land, and has given to his four children 160 acres each. In 1885 he built a handsome residence in Victoria, where he now lives.

He was married March 1, 1845, to Mary Ann McDowell Tait, who was born Jan. 24, 1814. She is the daughter of John and Anna (Livingston) McDowell, natives of Scotland. Her father came to America in 1839, settled in Copley Township, on section 14. In 1867 he died, the mother having preceded him in 1824, taking her departure from this life in Scotland.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon have a family of six children, four of whom are living – James, Elizabeth M., Alexander H., and Albinus N. James married Margaret McQuarrie; Elizabeth M. is the wife of William Robson, and is the mother of one child, named Percy E.; Alexander is the husband of Mary Olmstead, and they have four children as follows: Arthur, Lizzie E., John H., and James P.; Albinus N. married Miss Emma Smith, who has borne him two children – Peter T. and Leroy S.

Mrs. Gordon by her first marriage had a family of four sons, namely, John, William F., Peter G. and Houston P. These have all acted nobly in defense of their country, enlisting in the war of the Rebellion in 1862., and giving all they had to give in that noble cause. Peter G., who had become Lieutenant, was killed at the battle of Nashville; John was wounded at Dallas and died at Chattanooga, from the effects of his wounds; the other two returned home to their home when the war was over, with gratitude for the boon of their lives, but with sadness for the two who had perished in the great struggle which robbed so many households of husband or father, brother or son. The four brothers all enlisted in Co. G, 89th Ill. Vol. Inf.; Col Hotchkiss was the commander.

Mr. William Tait, the deceased husband of Mrs. Gordon, died in 1843, at his home on section 16, in Copley Township. William Tait, Jr., is a physician at Galesburg, and was married to Miss Rhoda Sperry, a native of Oneida County, N.Y. To them have been born two children, both living – May J. and Margaret M. Houston P. unites in wedlock with Mary Levalley, a native of Knox County, and they are the parents of one child – Annie J.

Mr. Gordon is Republican in politics and an important factor in this community, and, with his wife, is a working member of the Presbyterian Church.

    Peter Gordon

Peter Gordon, son of James and Jean (Heron) Gordon, was born in Creetown, Scotland, May 19, 1819. In 1840 he came to this country and finally settled in Copley Township, Knox County, Illinois. He began working by the month, but later bought a farm and was so successful in his chosen occupation, that, in 1885, when he moved to Victoria, he had greatly increased his possession.

In 1845 Mr. Gordon was married in Copley Township to Mrs. Mary Ann (McDowell) Tait, who was born in Scotland, January 24, 1814, and was the daughter of John and Anna (Livingston) McDowell. Her mother died in Scotland in 1824, and her father came to America in 1839 and settled in Copley Township. Mr. McDowell died in 1867. Mr. William Tait, Mrs. Gordon's first husband, died in 1843, leaving her with four sons: John, William F., Peter G. and Houston P. In 1862 these four sons enlisted in Company G, Eighty-ninth Illinois Volunteers, Colonel Hotchkiss commanding. John died at Chattanooga from wounds received in the fighting at Dalton. Peter G. rose to the rank of lieutenant and fell at the battle of Nashville.
William and Houston P. survived the war. The former is a physician in Galesburg. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon have four children: James, Elizabeth M., Alexander H. and Albinus N. James has a farm in Walnut Grove Township; Alexander H. has one in Copley Township; Albinus is on the home farm; Elizabeth M. married William Robson, of Wataga, Illinois.

From the humble beginning in 1840, Mr. Gordon's possessions grew to more than fifteen hundred acres, and he gave each of his four children one hundred and sixty acres of land. He has also a handsome residence in Victoria. For many years he has been an active member of the Presbyterian church, and is always interested in whatever contributes to the welfare of the community in which he lives. For twenty years he has been a School Director and he is looked up to by all as one of the most substantial men in his township. In politics, Mr. Gordon is a republican.
