    Obituary
    Obituary of Milton Clarence Honsey

Milton Honsey, 77, the first mayor of New Hope and a key promoter of metropolitan government in the Twin Cities area, died Monday at his winter home In Tucson, Ariz. He had been expected to return to the Twin Cities for a board meeting of the New Hope State Bank, of which he was chairman. After he failed to arrive on a flight from Tucson, friends went to his home and found his body. He apparently died of a heart attack, said his daughter, Joan Peterson.

Honsey was elected mayor of New Hope In 1953, when it was largely a farming community. He kept the office until 1969 when he resigned to become the first chairman of the metropolitan sewer board. He retired from the board in 1974. In 1964, as a past president of the Hennepin County League of Cities, he and the league's director, Vernon Bergstrom, went to Toronto to look at that city's experiment in metropolitan government. They came back with a favorable report and subsequently persuaded the league to support such an arrangement in the Twin - Cities area. The Metropolitan Council was created In 1967. The Minneapolis Star editorialized a few years later that, If anyone deserved the title of father of the Twin Cities approach to metropolitan government, it was Honsey.

Honsey spent most of his life In real estate and banking businesses. And from the late 1940s through the 1950s, he, operated a small dairy farm In New Hope,

His wife, Dorothy, died In 1979. Surviving are daughters Joan Peterson and Noreen Krogness, both of Orono; a brother Willard Honsey of New Hope, one granddaughter and five grandsons. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday al Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church, 2020 W. Lake of the Isles Pkwy., with burial at Hillside Cemetery.
