    Obituary
    Obituary of Claryce Arleen Splittstoser

Claryce Arleen Lundahl of Braham, MN passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Feb. 9th 2015. She was 75 years old.
Claryce was born Aug. 8th 1939 at home in Maple Ridge Township, Isanti County, MN to Harvey and Ida (Siewert) Splittstoser. She was a farm girl and graduated from Braham High School in 1957. She started working at the Park Cafe in Braham at age 14 and continued in various jobs until she started her career in the Braham schools as a cook, and worked for 20+ years.

Claryce married Howard Lundahl in 1959 and they raised four boys. Howard and Claryce lived in the Twin Cities and Fargo, ND before settling on a farm in Braham, MN where they’ve lived for the last 39 years. There they raised their boys and taught them the values and importance of hard work and family.
She attended St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Braham where she was confirmed and was an active member. Her faith led her to serve others. She did this by volunteering at Tusen Tack in Braham and serving Meals on Wheels. She also traveled to Ukraine to help at an orphanage, to Africa for a medical mission’s trip, and to Canada on a mission for bible school.

She was an un-official adopted mom to many people in need. She was the kind of person who was non-judgmental, accepting and supportive of those going through hard times. So many people called her “ma”. She was cherished and well loved by all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert and twin sister Corrine.

Claryce is survived by her husband, Howard; sons, Kim, Karl (Bonnie), Kendall (Tracy) and Kurt; grandchildren, Kristie (Nick) Block, Lacy (Torsten) Wolff, Laura Storkamp, Adam, Kyle, Kori, and Kami Lundahl; great-grandchildren, Adeline, Charley, Marshall, Colton, Ruger, and Milo; siblings, Ordeen (Merilyn) Splittstoser, Geraleen (Donald) Westerberg, and Glorian Hein; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

A Memorial Service was held on Fri. Feb 13th at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Braham. Arrangements were by the Rock Ingebrand Funeral Home.

Mary A. McCarthy, Professor, 41; Active in Father's Presidential Bid

    By WOLFGANG SAXON

Mary Abigail McCarthy, a professor at Yale University Law School who was highly visible in the political campaign waged by Eugene J. McCarthy, her father, in 1968, died on Saturday at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford, Conn. She was 41 years old and lived in Branford.

She died of pancreatic cancer, her father said, adding that she had been under treatment for a year at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Ms. McCarthy, who was born in Washington, graduated from Radcliffe College, attended the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and received her law degree from New York University. She began to teach at Yale in 1982 as a supervising attorney and lecturer in clinical studies after a brief period as a public defender in Washington.

    A Legal Clinic

As co-director of the legal clinic, training students in the practice of law, she specialized in public-interest disputes, individual rights and immigration cases.

Ms. McCarthy was a product of the 1960's civil-rights and antiwar campaigns. Opposed to violence, she turned to politics when the marches on the Pentagon and elsewhere deteriorated into street clashes.

She skipped a semester in her sophomore year at Radcliffe in 1968 to enlist in the Presidential campaign of Mr. McCarthy. With her mother, Abigail, and other family members, she scoured campuses and the country for votes for the former Minnesota Democratic Senator.

Because of her academic record, she was nevertheless permitted to graduate with her class in 1969. She later did advanced legal studies at Georgetown Law School.

Beside her parents, Ms. McCarthy is survived by two sisters, Ellen, of Washington, and Margaret, of Boston, and a brother, Michael, of Seattle.

    Congressional Record

TRIBUTE TO MARY ABIGAIL MCCARTHY (US Senate - August 03, 1990)

Mr. DURENBERGER. Mr. President, the Senate has lost a member of its extended family. I wish to acknowledge the death of Mary Abigail McCarthy on July 28, 1990, after a long illness. She was the daughter of Eugene McCarthy, the former U.S. Senator from Minnesota, and Abigail Quigley McCarthy.
Mary Abigail McCarthy was a gifted young woman who, as a college student, actively campaigned among her peers during Mr. McCarthy's Presidential bid in 1968. She was a youth leader who, according to columnist Mary McGrory, interpreted the candidate to the young and the young to the candidate.
Ms. McCarthy was a student at the Convent of the Visitation School in St. Paul and Stone Ridge Country Day School in Washington. She graduated from Radcliffe College of Harvard University and New York University Law School. In a small Washington-based private practice, she carried on her family's and her own tradition of service by representing low-income clients.
Ms. McCarthy was working as a public defender in a federally funded program in Washington when she was asked to teach at Yale University. During her decade of service, she introduced courses on the disabled and on immigration law. Her students also benefited from her supervision of their trial work.
Mary Abigail McCarthy did her generation of Minnesotans and Americans proud. She will be missed. I extend condolences to her parents, her sisters Ellen and Margaret, and her brother Michael.
