In an 1874 magazine article in the Harper's New Monthly, it stated that in 1863 the "Dawn of Hope", a wooden sailing vessel, started from Bombay, and was never heard of. All hands (twenty-eight) lost.
The article was titled The Rights and Wrongs of Seamen by Charles Nordhoff. The article described ships that were too old and unseaworthy to be insured and they become part of the decrepit flock of "black sheep". The underwriters would not insur their hull but would insur the cargo, thus making these ships profitable to sail.
The "Dawn of Hope" was owned by a Liverpool ship owner by the name of William James Fernie who testified before the Royal Commissioners that he lost 19 ships during a ten year period, one of which included the "Dawn of Hope".
