    FRANKSTON SHOOTING CASE.

    PETER HANNAH SENTENCED.

    Two Years' Imprisonment.

Before Mr. Justice Macfarlan in the Criminal Court yesterday Peter Gordon Hannah, who had been found guilty of having unlawfully wounded Senior constable Culhane at Frankston on November 17, was arraigned for sentence.

Mr Gorman on behalf of Hannah, said that the prisoner had had 15 years' service as a constable. He had been presented on three counts, two of which implied intent and the third, which did not suggest intent. The verdict of guilty on the third count was probably due to the fact that the Crown had put it to the jury that intent did not enter into consideration.

Mr Justice Macfarlan said that Hannah was fortunate in not being found guilty on a more serious charge. Mr Justice Micfarlan, however, could not disregard the finding of the jury, which apparently thought that the prisoner did not shoot with intent to murder or with intent to wound. At the same time it was impossible to shut one's eyes to the fact that it was a most serious offence. He would take into consideration the fact that the prisoner was undoubtedly drunk at the time. The maximum statutory sentence prescribed was three years' imprisonment, and in the circumstances it would not be right to impose a sentence of less than two years' imprisonment with hard labour. That sentence Hannah would have to undergo.

    NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING
    Gallant Rescue at Wigtown

On Friday evening four young men, enticed by genial weather and the full tide, went to bathe near Wigtown quay. Three of the number, NM Todd, CM Routledge, and Oswald R Hannah, had some little knowledge of swimming, but the fourth, AJ Hannah, could not swim at all. After the four had been sporting about in the water for some time, AJ Hannah got into a small boat and dived from it into deep water, apparently under the belief that he would come to the surface again near the boat, and be able to pull himself into it. To his surprise, however, he found himself away from the boat altogether. His companions at once saw that he was in difficulties, and threw a rope to him, but by this time he was unable to grasp it, and to the consternation of his companions again sank out of sight. He again came to the surface, but further away than ever, and before anything could be done he sank again. Matters began to look ominous, for neither Routledge nor Oswald Hannah could trust themselves longer in the water. Todd, however, pluckily took to the water and swam about in the vicinity of the spot where Hannah had been last seen, and repeatedly dived down in the hope of getting in touch with him. The water, however, was far from clear, and just when it seemed all hope must be abandoned, and when Todd was pretty well exhausted by his efforts, his hand came into contact with Hannah's head. Todd took no time in bringing Hannah to the edge of the water where the two were assisted out by Routledge and Hannah's brother. In a short time both had recovered sufficiently to proceed home, and we are glad to say they are nothing the worse of their trying experience.

Hannah is engaged in the County Court's office, Wigtown, and Todd is a son of Mr Hugh Todd, P-F, Wigtown. Todd deserves every credit for his gallant and successful efforts to rescue his companion, for there is little doubt that but for his persistent diving Hannah would have had little chance indeed of being brought to the surface alive. The water at the place in question is very deep, and the current was influenced at the time by the tide.

    WIGTOWN YOUTH'S BRAVERY REWARDED

    Presentation of Certificate

An interesting ceremony took place at the Library of the County Buildings, Wigtown, on Wednesday evening, when Mr Norman W Todd, was presented with a certificate of the Royal Humane Society for saving life at Wigtown Quay in June last. Viscount Dalrymple presided and there was a good attendance.

Lord Dalrymple, in handing over the certificate, said that Norman Todd has already shown that it was deeds and not words that counted, and he would not inflict a long speech upon them. The certificate was one which he himself would have been particularly proud to have won. Opportunities of winning such a certificate did not occur to everyone, and when they did occur it was not everyone who had either the pluck or the ability to use them. Norman Todd had the opportunity, and he had shown that he had the pluck and the ability, and he congratulated him on the successful rescue and on having been awarded the certificate of the Royal Humane Society, which he had very great pleasure in handing over to him.

Mr AJ Hannah said that it gave him great pleasure to know that his friend's gallant and manly action, not to say dangerous and risky achievement, had been suitably recognised by the Royal Humane Society and the Carnegie Hero Trust. Mr Todd might quite easily have lost his own life in rescuing his - which was perhaps not worth saving - but he was glad to say that it had come through alright, and he was sure that if such an occurance occurred again, Mr Todd would not stand back.

Dr Hunter, in a few appropriate words, proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Viscount Dalrymple for his presence there that night, and for the graceful manner in which he had handed over the testimonial. This having been heartily recorded, his Lordship briefly returned the thanks, and the proceedings terminated.
