He was buried in May 1685 in the North Burial GroundG in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, United StatesG. To locate the headstones of Captain John and Sarah, begin at the cemetery office at the south end of the North Burial Ground. Drive north from the office, taking the main path (to the right of the large stone at the entrance). After three "intersections," you will see the "Dahlia Path" sign (shown above) on your left. The headstones of John and Sarah are approximately 48 feet WSW (west-south-west) of the sign.
Biography
John Whipple was in Dorchester, Mass. as early as 1632 in service to Israel Stoughton, carpenter. He received a grant of land at Dorchester neck in 1637. He married his wife Sarah in Dorchester in 1639 or '40. They united with the church in Dorchester in 1641. He owned a house and forty or fifty acres of land near what is now (1898) Neponset Village. In 1658 he sold his estate in Dorchester to James Minot, and the same year, or the year following, removed to Providence, where he received an allotment of land July 29, 1659. He and his son John took oath of allegiance in 1666. He was a member of the town council in 1669 and received a license to keep an ordinary in 1674. On the tomb stones of John and Sarah Whipple, in the north burial-ground in Providence, are the following inscriptions:
" In Memory of | Capt John Whipple, who | was born in England & | Died in Providence Town | ye 16th Day of May Anno | Dom. 1685. About 68 | years of age."
"In Memory of Mrs Sarah | Whipple, wife of Capt. | John Whipple. She was | born in Dorchester, in | New England, & Died in | Providence, Anno Dom. | 1666. Aged about 42 | years."

WHIPPLE BRANCH SUFFERS FROM GENETIC DISEASE

Researchers are zeroing in on a gene that causes a serious disease for a line of the Whipple family descending from Capt. John Whipple of Providence, RI. Their goal is to understand and eventually find a treatment for the lethal disorder. Whipple families in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio have been identified as carriers of the disease.

Known as olive-ponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA), also known as dominant spinopontine atrophy (DSPA), the disease is a mystery. No one knows what causes it or how to stop or even slow its lethal progression. The genetic material in each body cell contains about three billion bits of information. The goal is to narrow the location of the gene to a single small stretch of one of the 23 chromosomes that carry all of the body's blueprints. Researchers found a disease causing a gene in a certain area on chromosome #6 in some families, but not in this family.

Descendants of Benjamin Whipple and Sarah Bernon are the first generation known to suffer from the disease. It appeared in the families of their sons Daniel and Ephriam and likely hundreds of Whipples have died from its terrible effects. The disorder is equally distributed between sexes, suggesting an autosomal dominant mode of transmission. Fortunately, not all members of the family inherit the disease but each child of an affected person is at 50% risk.

Alice Lazzarini, M.S., Director, Clinical Genetics, Department of Neurology, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, is leading a team studying the disorder. "This is a difficult disease," Ms. Lazzarini says. "After years of research we still do not know its cause or how to treat it. If we are to be successful in isolating the causative gene, we need family members to share their medical histories and authorize autopsies on those who die from ii. Our goal is to isolate the culprit gene, figure out how it goes wrong, and then design treatments to correct the defect."

The disease usually begins in the mid 30 age group although it has been detected as early as 18. Symptoms include uncertain gait - leading observers to believe the person is intoxicated, slurred speech, double vision, and cramps. Conditions slowly worsen. Writing and buttoning clothes become difficult and then impossible; incontinence follows. Eventually, unable to stand, patients are confined to a wheelchair and can eventually require hospitalization.

Benjamin Whipple died in his one-hundredth year in 1788 leading researchers to believe his wife's family introduced the disease into this Whipple line. His first wife was Sarah Bernon, daughter of Gabril Bernon, a French Huguenot.
