Gordon Hughan was born in Muir of Bagby, Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbright, Scotland (A Muir is the Scots word for moorland, and Scots Gaelic for sea) He was christened in the Church of Scotland in Kirkmabreck on 21 July 1804 and died on 12 May 1881 in Taieri Beach, Otago, New Zealand. It is stated that he was 80years old on his death certificate this would mean that he was born about 1801.

His father’s name was Alexander Hughan born about 1872 and his mother’s name is not mentioned on the baptism record, but I believe it may have been Christain Cowan who married a Alexander Hughan on the 21 April 1792 at Kirkinner, Wigtownshire, Scotland. Gordon’s death certificate states that his name fathers name was Thomas Hughan, mother’s name was not given.

Gordon Hughan slibings are as follows:
    Thomas Hughan born 1783
    Ebenzer Drew Hughan born 1795
    Sanders (Alexander) Hughan born 1800
Lastly came Gordon born between 1801-1804

Gordon Hughan born 1801-04 married Mary Marie McNay in Scotland in about 1825.
Five of their eight children were born in Scotland they were
    David Gordon born 1827,
    Christina born 1828,
    John born 1829,
    Janet (Jessie) born 1834,
    Alexander born 1836,

The Hughan family moved to England in about 1837 their address was 38 Kent Terrace, East Kent, Liverpool. Gordon worked as a Labourer, then later as a Porter. Gordon and Mary had three more children in Liverpool, England they were
    Mary Ann born 1837,
    Thomas born 1840
    William born 1843.

Gordon and his sons and David and John left Liverpool, England in about August 1853 aboard "Charles Fox Bennett” bound for Australia. Another researcher has found a record of them arriving on 18 November 1853 [I have not found this shipping record]. The ship Charles Fox Bennett sank off the coast of Western Australia.

"Charles Fox Bennett" was a wooden sailing vessel 127 tons. Burns was the captain, she struck sunken rocks about two nautical miles from Cape Leeuwin, and one nautical mile from shore this is off the coast of Western Australia on the 18 November 1853. Squalls accompanied by thunder and lightning set in and the ship was battered by a rising sea, forcing the fifteen passengers and ten crew to abandon her. The following night more heavy seas carried her off the rocks into a deep hole where she filled and sank. A wreck found in 1980 may be this vessel.

Gordon and his sons made their way to Melbourne, Victoria. Gordon was living or staying in 71 Collins Street, Melbourne, Australia, in the” Friend in Hand Inn” when his daughter- in- law Christina and her young son Gordon arrived in Australia they sailed on the "Gambia", they arrived on 22 April 1855. There was also a Grace Hughan born 1830 that sailed on the "Gambia" I believe this was Gordon niece, daughter of Thomas Hughan.

I have conformation that Gordon's wife Mary and the other children emigrated to Australia later they arrived in January 1854 on the "Boomarang", they were mother, Mary, children Alexander, Christina, Janet, Mary, Thomas, William. Sadly Janet their third daughter died just before their arrival in Melbourne, her death was registered in Victoria, Australia. The family moved to the gold town of Ballarat in Victoria where they lived for a short time and late in 1855 Gordon and his family set sail on the "Gil Blas" bound for Dunedin, New Zealand the family consisted of Gordon and Mary(parents) David 25 years, Alexander 19 years, Mary 18 years, Thomas 15 years, and William 12 years. Two other woman travelled with the family they were Eliza Hughan 22 years, Mary Ann Hughan 20 years (not sure where they fit into the family, they may have been nieces) the ship arrived in Dunedin, New Zealand on the 29 November 1855.

David Gordon Hughan born 1827, Gordon and Mary’s oldest son was a first mate on board the ships that sailed between Liverpool and Australia between 1844 -1860.

John Hughan born 1829, Gordon and Mary's third child stayed in Australia and started a large density of Hughans in Australia ending his days in Perth.

Christina their second child married my Great Grandfather Robert Wells on 9 February 1855 in Melbourne, Australia and they left for New Zealand on 13 April 1855 on board the "Spray" arriving in Nelson, New Zealand where they lived for a few years and had a family of three children in Nelson before they joined the Hughan family at Taieri Beach in 1860. Sadly one of their children Dianna Wells who was born in Nelson died in Dunedin at seven weeks. Robert Wells was an Australia convict who had served his time in Tasmania for horse stealing and was a free man when he married Christina Hughan.

Gordon and Mary and their family lived in tents when they first arrived in Dunedin as there was not a house available for them. Dunedin at that time was just a small settlement. In June of 1858 Gordon Hughan applied for land at section 6, block 25 Waihola S D (near Taieri Beach) and in the next five years he had purchased the adjoining 4 and 5 blocks making a farm of 159 acres. Their first home was built with fern tree logs plastered with clay it had a thatched roof and clay floors. Later this cottage was to be used as for the first Taieri Beach School. Their second house was built at the junction of Akatore and Kilmog Roads near Taieri Mouth.

Gordon also had a job as the local postmaster from 1865 -1871 Gordon Hughan would pick up the outgoing mail every Friday from Taieri Beach and deliver it to Waihola by riding across the hills in time to catch the mail coach then ride back to Taieri Beach with the inbound mail before the children left school so that they could take the mail home to their parents.

Mary Marie Hughan looked after her daughter Christina Wells (Hughan) children after she died in 1870 of consumption (pulmonary tuberculosis) the children's father Robert Wells had died earlier in 1865 in Hobart, Australia when they had moved back there. This was where Christina and Robert had their last child John (Jack) Hughan Wells). After Robert died the Hughan family had arranged for Christina and the children to come back to New Zealand. She sailed on the 13 November aboard “Albion” departing Melbourne Australia and arriving Dunedin New Zealand.

Sadly Mary Marie Hughan died only three years after her daughter in 1873.

Gordon Hughan lived with his son Tom and his family in his later years at Taieri Beach and died in 1881. His obituary states that he was 80 years old but if he was born in 1804 this would make him 77 or 78 years old. He was baptized in 1804 but he may have been born earlier in 1881 Gordon and Mary are buried in the Taieri Beach cemetery, their grave is not marked.
