    Obituary of Captain Charles Bittenbring III
    Washington Post - 24 July 2009

    Capt., U.S. Navy.

    At the Virginia Hospital Center. He had pneumonia. He received a bachelor's degree in engineering from Tulane University in 1940, and moved to Arlington area in 1963.

    He was a deputy director of military construction for the Navy Department and also served in the Navy as a civil engineer. He was a member of the Seabees until his retirement as a captain in 1970.

    He served on the Arlington Commission on Aging and was its chairman from 1989 to 1994. He was also a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Arlington.

    His wife of nine years, Patricia Ripp Bittenbring died in 1957, and his wife of 20 years, Sybil Combs Bittenbring died in 1998.

    He is survived by his wife of nine years, Louise Rea Bittenbring; four children from his first marriage, Karen Neilson (Graham), both of North Carolina, Charles Bittenbring IV (Patty), both of Hawaii, John Bitenbring (Dede), both of Virginia, & Laurie Gonzalez (Michael), both of California; an adopted daughter, Anna Palazzotto of Louisiana; four stepchildren, Rebecca Pirocchi (Jesse), Robert Rea (Sonya), Rick Rea, & Cyndi Callahan (Dan); 16 grandchildren.
