  • Biography
He came to New England in 1629, in advance of the Winthrop Fleet of 1630, and was one of the founders of Salem, Mass. After residing in Salem a few years, in good standing, he came under the influence of Roger Williams, whose religious beliefs in civil liberties were in conflict with those of the civil and religious leaders of the colony. As a result, removal to Rhode Island was determined upon. The General Court issued a license for this group to remove, and to insure the permanence of their removal, also issued warrants against them. Richard Waterman received a confirmation of land in Providence, 10 June 1637. He was named among the Associates of Roger Williams in the latter's deed to them of 8 October 1638. He was one of the signers of the Contract at Providence, 27 July 1640, proposing a form of government, and was also on the Providence Committee of 18 May 1647 to form a governmnent under the charter Williams had brought from England. Over the years, Richard Waterman was very active in many civil activities in Providence, RI. He died in 1673 and was buried on his land in Providence on what became the southeast corner of Waterman and Benefit Streets. A granite monument erected to his memory in 1840 contains some errors of fact, such as dignifying him with the title of Colonel, and stating that he came from Bristol, England, with Roger Williams, in 1631 in the ship Lion. The records show him to have been an able, diligent, and conscientious man, probably without much formal education, but with no small measure of natural talent. • Biography
Thomas is reported to have arrived on the LYON in 1631 with Roger Williams. He appears to be one of five that followed him into banishment to the founding of R.I. To young to be recorded in the first land distrubition, he nevertheless was awarded his rightful share. He became a prominent citizen of Providence. The 1872 ANGEL GENEALOGY claims that there was a class of men of distinction who escaped to America from England as servants to those that were permitted to come, and that Thomas Angell came with Roger Williams on the Lyon as a servant or apprentice ( Angel genealogy, p.8 ). But Angell does not appear on Winthrop`s partial passenger list for this ship, nor does Williams ever name Angell as his servant. Dr. Guild, librarian at Brown University in the last century, claimed that Thomas Angell was a lad of 14 and servant to Roger Williams. Guild was quoted by Henry F. Waters (Register 43 [1889]:299 ), who offered no proof to support his statement, and proceeded to propose a familial relationship, since disproven, between Angell and Williams ( see Peakirk Angells Chapter and TAG 66 [1991]:129 ). Perhaps the basis for these traditions was a reminiscence published in the Register 14[1860]:129 almost 30 years earlier. A visit by Ezra Stiles to John Angell of Providence on 17 Nov 1771 resulted in a diary entry which included the following: " I visited ( in Providence, R.I. ) Jno. Angel, who told me he was born in Providence, Oct 4, 1691, son of James Angel, son of Thomas Angel, who came from Salem with Roger Williams.... His grandfather he said was Mr. Williams hired man at Salem & came away with him; and the Angel preserved many particulars respecting Mr. Williams." While interesting, John Angell`s remarks should be taken in context as memories of events over 100 years earlier, and with a grain of salt, given his purpose. The first appearance of Thomas Angell in the Colonial records is his mark on a document that bears no date. The establishment of that date is a matter of some controversy, as it has been variously reported in many published histories. In a letter written by Ro. Williams to his friend and mentor, John Winthrop, about Sept 1636, Williams tells of the simple form of government that his fledgling colony had enjoyed until then. However: "Now of late some young men single persons ( of whome we have much neede ) being admitted to freedom of Inhabitation, and promising to subject to Orders made by the Consent of the Howseholders, are disconted with their estate, and seeke the Freedome of Vote allso, and aequalitie etc" To answer this, Williams, proposed two compacts be drawn up. One was intended for the householders and the other for the single men. He drafted these two agreements and tried the language out on his friend Winthrop ( Winthrop Papers, III:296-8 ). Apparently, the final draft was modified to include any new person wishing to become an inhabitant, and it is to this paper that Thomas Angell made his mark, sometime between 13 July 1638 ( the earliest date signer Chad Brown could have been present ) and 1640 ( when Angell was granted a house Lot, ERP I:1 ). " We whose names are hereunder desirous to inhabit in the town of Providence, do promise to subject ourselves in active and passive obedience, to all such orders or agreements as shall be made for public good for the body, in an orderly way, by the major consent of the present inhabitants, masters of families, encorporated together into a town fellowship and others whom they shall admit unto them, only in civil things. Richard Scott William X Renolds John X Fields Chad browne John Warner George Rickland Edwarde Cope Thomas X Angell Thomas Harris Francis Weeks X Benedict Arnold Josua Winsor William Wickenden " ( ERP I:1 ) The signers included both married and unmarried men, making it clear that Roger`s original idea of two separate agreements, one for single and one for married householders, was merged. It is not certain whether Thomas signed as a married man or whether he was still single. No marriage record has been found for Thomas and Alice Ashton, but they probably were married by this date, and from the sge of their children, surely no later than 1642. above taken verbatim from, THE ANCESTRY OF EMILY JANE ANGELL.
