- NoteMaj-General Sir Francis de Guingand (1900–79),British Army officer who served as Montgomery's Chief of Staff during the Western Desert campaigns and during the fighting in north-west Europe which followed the Normandy landings in June 1944.
After serving as military assistant to the secretary of state for war, Hore-Belisha, which gave him valuable insights into the highest level of politics and military affairs, de Guingand served in the Middle East where Auchinleck, C-in-C Middle East, made him director of military intelligence and then brigadier, General Staff, at Eighth Army HQ. De Guingand did not feel qualified for either appointment, but both showed him to be the perfect staff officer. That August he became chief of staff to Montgomery, whom he had known since the 1920s, when Montgomery took over command of Eighth Army. De Guingand's role as a foil to Montgomery was a vital one and his diplomacy and tact helped palliate Montgomery's abrasiveness. Though both claimed the credit for some critical decisions what mattered was that the right ones were mostly made. After the war Montgomery treated de Guingand shabbily, and de Guingand never forgave him. He left the army in 1946 and became a successful businessman and author. He was knighted in 1944.
