Karen got to go to Grandma and Grandpa Huffman's to stay by herself when she was little. Grandpa would go, 'Ah, Ah, Ah' and lean close and Karen would do the same to him. She talked young and a lot. She was so helpful when Larry was a baby. Entertained him by banging all the tin dishes on the metal table and do it again and again. Kept him laughing so that he didn't cry and so that Mom could cook supper.

She would go next door and knock, open the screen door and say, ' 'Body home?' She was 18 months old when Larry was born; Dad took her to the neighbors and they took her to bed, supposedly to sleep. Guess who slept there? Nobody. She kept up a constant chatter from 2 am till 7:30 when Dad went back for her.

Coley is the oldest of the twins by 22 minutes. She and Kathy loved to play 'House' with their dollies. They each had a huge doll and another one they sat in chairs around a table for a tea party. These were their 'granddaughters.' One was named Susie and one was named Bleedy; I've forgotten the names of the other two. What a great time they would have! They played some with a train and trucks Larry had and a doll house Karen had, too.

One time Mom and Dad left the twins with Maudelene Sterner, a good friend; when they came back in two weeks, Coley was not glad to see them. Wouldn't get up on Mom's lap for a while: they'd taken too long a trip to the grocery store.

Coley was real talkative.

Coley didn't have colic. She didn't crawl until she was 9 months old; she would sit and watch Kathy go. When Coley did start, there was no stopping her. When they walked Kathy was a few days ahead of her, but they both walked at a year old. When Coley was 4 she felll downstairs and broke her shoulder bone. Mom took hker to the Dr and hke set it and put a cast on. She hummed all the time he worked on her. Later, when she was 7, Coley cut her arm on the garage door glass--deep. She was singing while the Dr took stitches in it, so that it wouldn't hurt so bad.

Kathy had colic for 3 months from 10 pm to 2 am every night. Coley would sleep. Dad had to go to work at 2:30 am; he had to get his sleep and Mom couldn't rock Kathy all night, so she got smart and took Kathy to bed with her, upside down on her chest. Got her warm and they both went to sleep. Coley awoke for her 2 am bottle and Mom wondered, 'Whose baby is that?! Finally, she got up and fed them.

When Kathy was little, she came in one day with a sugar pear. Mom asked, 'Where did you get that?' Kathy answered, 'Out begainst the tree and the fence.' Kathy always followed Mom to the neighbors and listened carefully to each word, correcting whkere it was needed. Whenever anyone wanted to know how old Mom was, Kathy quickly answered before Mom could--with the plain truth.

Paul was a happy baby. He didn't think Mom could say No to him, but she did. Paul would get up to a floor lamp and stand there, shaking it. Mom would say, 'No!' He would just grin and shake it more. He got his hands smacked and would go back down to the floor to try something else.

When Paul was 2 or 3 he would say, 'Amen!' for Pastor Rowe when he was preaching. Before that, Paul would stand up in the pew beside Mom and Dad and he'd turn around and make faces to entertain the people behind them. After the church service he would stand at the door beside Pastor Rowe and shake hands with everybody.

When Karen got married, the family missed her, so they got a dog, part Cocker and part Collie; they named her 'Bootsie.' When they got her home, Paul took his cello out by the refridgerator so he would be right by Bootsie's dish while she was eating. Mom doesn't know what kind of music she preferred, but, 'Oh, Well!' She heard him say to Bootsie, 'Now remember, I'm your friend. If you need anything at all, just tell me and I'll get it for you.' He was 6 years old then. This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, not only with Paul, but with the whole family. She lived with them for 11 years.

MONTICELLO -- Services for James Joseph Baker Sr., 58, of Monticello, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Miller-Roscka Funeral Home.
He died at 7:35 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2005, in his residence.
Pastor Jeff Johns will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Hughes Cemetery, Monticello.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the White Horse Christian Center, c/o Jim Baker Memorial Fund, and to the Gideons, and Condo Racing.

Biographical Information

Jim had lived in the Monticello community since 1972, coming here from Lafayette, Indiana. He had also lived in Pine Village, Muncie and Fort Wayne. Jim was a 1964 graduate of Jefferson High School in Lafayette and a 1968 graduate of Ball State University in Muncie, IN. He had been a self-employed Certified Public Accountant since 1974, owing and operating James J. Bakers CPA here in Monticello and most recently Baker - Milligan. Jim was a member of the White Horse Christian Center in Lafayette. He was involved in numerous organizations and held various leadership roles. Jim was involved woth the Monticello Camp of Gideons, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Monticello Youth Football, Optimist Club, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, GOP Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited and Royal Rangers. He was a former member of the Assembly of God Church.
