    Obituary
    Obituary of James LeRoy Melchert
    Columbia Missourian - Sep 20, 2009

James LeRoy Melchert, a former member of the United States Air Force and world traveler, had a passion for riding motorcycles.

I picked up my love of riding bikes from my dad, his son Jamie Melchert of Columbia said. I was the only kid on the block that could say my dad was cool.

"He was a nice, out-going type of person," a longtime friend, Kenneth Koeller of Sedalia, said.

Mr. Melchert, who had an inoperable brain tumor, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Cole Camp. He was 76.

He was born in Winter, Wis., on Nov. 25, 1932, to Otto Frank and Marian (Martin) Melchert. He graduated from Winter High School in Winter, Wis., in 1950 and then served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from Jan. 17, 1951, to Dec. 2, 1954.

He married Audrey M. Troedel on Feb. 19, 1955 in West Bend, Wis. She died Nov. 2, 2008.

During his 19 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Melchert lived in Morocco, Libya and the Azores Islands, eventually retiring in Sedalia in 1973 after being relocated to Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster.
His son said he had an interest in history and geography. At one point he even read a set of encyclopedias "from A to Z," Jamie Melchert added. "He had an inquiring mind."

Jamie Melchert remembers taking family trips with his father.

"We went on motorcycling trips together," he said. He described one trip in Wyoming when they drove motorcycles through the Rocky Mountains.

Mr. Melchert is survived by his son; one daughter, Heather Ives of Cole Camp; a brother, William Melchert of South Dakota; five grandchildren, Jenny Pehl, Marla Ives, Renee Ives, Haley Melchert and Nicholas Melchert; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Ruthann Pehl.

His wife; one sister, Lorraine Melchert Keating; and four brothers, Richard, Peter, Otto, and Francis Melchert, died earlier.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cole Camp, where Mr. Melchert was a member. The Rev. Keith Branson will be conducting the service. The burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery in Springfork.

The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church with visitation to follow.

The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church or Good Samaritan Care Center in care of the Fox Funeral Home in Cole Camp.

Pallbearers will be Koeller, John Gerke, Gordon Ives, Frank Tobaben, Victor Monsees and Mike Simon.

    Obituary
    Obituary of Audrey Mae Melchert
    Columbia Missourian, November 4, 2008

Audrey Mae Melchert, who was head nurse of pediatrics at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia for 25 years, loved children.
"She taught the young children in her unit to drink through straws," her daughter, Heather Ives, said. "She loved taking care of them, and this made it easier. She would always let the babies sit on her lap or in her chair at her desk. She wanted to give them lots of attention."

Mrs. Melchert died at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Cole Camp on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008. She was 76.

She was born on Feb. 19, 1932, in Black Wolf, Wis., to Arthur and Gladys (Untch) Troedel.

Mrs. Melchert was the oldest of eight children. She had to work at a factory to pay for her college education, said her sister, Mary Zuern.

Once she obtained her nursing degree, the occupation became very important to Mrs. Melchert. "Nursing was her life," said Zuern.

She married James Melchert on Feb. 19, 1955, at the Holy Angels Church in West Bend, Wis.

Mrs. Melchert loved to travel, and because her husband was in the military, she was able to live in exotic places, such as Africa.
Her son, Jamie Melchert, said that she also loved exotic foods and movies, especially science fiction and horror films.
"We would stay up until two in the morning as kids watching movies with her," Melchert said. "It wasn't your typical childhood."
She retired from nursing in 1994.

Mrs. Melchert is survived by her husband; a daughter, Heather Ives of Cole Camp; a son, Jamie Melchert of Columbia; five sisters, Leona Hagner, Carol Grissman and Sue Johnson, all of West Bend, Wis., Mary Zuern of Allenton, Wis., and Pat Schmidt of Plymouth, Wis.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

One sister, Betty Werner; one brother, Arthur Troedel; and one granddaughter died earlier.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cole Camp with visitation to follow. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Keith Branson conducting.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 27922 Seven Hills Road, Cole Camp, MO 65235, or Good Samaritan Care Center in care of the Fox Funeral Home, P.O. Box 37, Cole Camp, MO 65325.
