Indianapolis, Indiana Pages 509-511 THOMAS C. GORDON. The biographer takes pleasure in herewith presenting a few facts in the life of Thomas C. Gordon, one of the most enterprising citizens of Little Falls, Morrison county, Minnesota. Thomas C. Gordon is a native of Wales, born in the southern portion of that country on March 16, 1866, son of James and Margaret Elizabeth (McKean) Gordon. The mother was a native of Kirkcudbright, Scotland, while the father was born in Dumfries. James Gordon had been educated as a civil engineer, but he devoted the active years of his life almost entirely to agricultural work and passed his entire life in various parts of the United Kingdom. He made a study of agriculture and stock raising and was known as one of the most advanced agriculturists of his country. He imported from America the first harvesting machine which entered Ireland. This was a Deering and was a great wonder in those days. He also took into Ireland the first herd of Scotch sheep and demonstrated that they were better adapted to conditions of the Emerald Isle than those native to it. James Gordon, was throughout his life a faithful member of the Presbyterian church and was a man of strong individuality and marked ability. Thomas C. Gordon is the fifth child in a family of nine children and received his elementary education at a private school in Wales. He came to this country when twenty-one years of age, landing at New York city and coming direct to Minnesota. At Saint Paul he took up work with the Little Falls Water Power Company. However, he remained in that city but a month, when he was transferred to Little Falls. That was in 1887 and he has since made Little Falls his home, being prominently identified with the life of that place. For about two years after forming his connection with the company in question he was assistant to the engineer and also kept the books of the company, and in 1889 he was made secretary-treasurer. He fills that position still with the addition of the duties of general manager, conferred on him in 1903. In addition to his duties with the Little Falls Water Power Company, Mr. Gordon has found time for taking an interest in several other business ventures. In the fall of 1888 he organized and assumed the management of the Gordon Lumber Company at Little Falls, which firm did a retail lumber business and Mr. Gordon continued at its head for three years, when he disposed of his interest. In 1890 he formed a corporation known as the Peoples Ice Company, and he remained with that company for twelve years, when he sold his interest. In the same year (1890) he organized the Little Falls Building and Loan Association and was made its secretary and treasurer. He continued in that connection as an officer for about three years. Mr. Gordon was also secretary of the Little Falls Milling Company, from 1890 to 1894, and was secretary of the Little Falls Electric and Water Company, now inactive. Warren, the eldest, married Georgia St. Martin; Harker, Bertha and Mercy are still at home with the parents. Mr. Gordon and his family are held in high esteem by their many friends and move in the best social circles of their city. Mr. Gordon has for many years been a devout member of the Episcopal church and advances its interests whenever possible. Politically, he is a Republican and has served his party as alderman of Little Falls for two years. For the past fourteen years he has been a member of the board of education of this city and in 1915 was again elected for a three-year term. For the past eight years, he has served that body as its president. While not directly interested in agriculture, Mr. Gordon has the best interests of the farming element at heart and is an earnest advocate of twentieth-century methods in that vocation, and as an evidence of his sympathy with those so engaged, he fills the office of president of the Agricultural Society of Morrison county. Mr. Gordon holds fraternal affiliation with the time-honored body of Freemasonry, the Knights of Pythias, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Knights of the Maccabees, and the Modern Woodmen, of America, in the workings of all of which he evinces more than a passive interest. Mr. Gordon is a good representative of a virile type of manhood—the men who do things, and these men become the natural leaders in any community where their lot may be cast. Although he was educated as an engineer, he devoted most of the active years of his life to agricultural work in various parts of the United Kingdom. In 1888 he organized the Gordon Lumber Co. and was manager of the company for three years, then disposed of his interest. He organized the People's Ice Co. in 1890, remaining with the Company for twelve years when he sold his interest. In 1890 he organized the Little Falls Building and Loan Association. He was Secretary Treasurer of the organization for three years. He was Secretary of the Little Falls Milling Company from 1890 to 1894, also Secretary of the Little Falls Electric and Water Power Company. Mr. Gordon organized and was Secretary Treasurer of the Morrison Electric Light, Heat and Power Company and of the Pike Rapids Hydro-Electric Company. On May 17, 1889 Thomas C. Gordon married Mary A. Stilwell in Little Falls. In about 1893 Mr. Gordon built the home at 600 4th. St. S.W. where he lived until he died. He also owned a summer home at Birch Lake. Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Gordon had four children: Warren McKean Gordon, James Harker Gordon, Bertha Gordon, and Mercy Gordon. Thomas C. Gordon was a Republican. He was much interested in civic affairs. He was alderman for two years, president of the Agricultural Society, member of the school board from 1904 to 1930 when he resigned. During that time he was President of the Board from 1910 to 1920. He took an active part in affairs of the Civic League, being especially interested in the Playground project sponsored by the League just before the World War. Summer playgrounds for the children with two part time paid directors were established. The work was given up when the United States entered the war. Petrus Liljedahl, the Athletic Director for the movement, went overseas and was killed. In summing up his character, the "History of Morrison and Todd Counties", published in 1915, said of him: "Mr. Gordon is a good representative of a virile type of manhood - the men who do things, and these men become natural leaders in any community where this lot is cast. Mr. Gordon possesses keen foresight, good judgment, and his honor and integrity are above reproach. He is one of the citizens of Little Falls who are always anxious to acquire for their city all possible advantages possessed by any other and is held in high esteem by all." In 1918 Mr. Gordon disposed of his interest in the Water Power Co. Soon after that, in partnership with his sons, Warren and Harker, he organized the Gordon Motor Co. This company built at 117 S.E. 1st St., a building to be used as sales room with garage in the rear, and took the agency for Chevrolet cars. After the death of Mr. Gordon, the company sold both building and the business. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon were active members in the Episcopal Church. Mr. Gordon was for many years an officer. He was also a member of the committee which had charge of the building of the present church completed in 1900 and donated the chancel window, the subject of which is "Resurrection Morn". Thomas Campbell Gordon died April 17, 1923. The following is taken from the editorial column of the Little Falls Transcript" of that date: "In the passing of Thomas Campbell Gordon, Little Falls suffers a distinct loss. He was one of her foremost citizens, a manly man - one whose energy and business sagacity were ever in waiting to do whatever task he might be called upon to do. His was an exemplary life, above reproach. While Mr. Gordon gave a greater share of his time and talents to public affairs than the ordinary man, yet domestic life was the paramount factor of his life. He loved his home folks and in turn was loved by them. They have the heartfelt sympathy in the community in which he so long served and the lasting knowledge that this city is a better one for his having lived in it." After the death of her husband, Mrs. Gordon sold both the home and the lake property. Since then she has spent the greater part of each year with her daughters, although she still calls Little Falls home. She usually comes back twice a year. The first eight years after she left here she spent in Minneapolis. Since then she has been with Miss Bertha Gordon in Chicago. They reside at 915 East 56th Street, Chicago. | |

Rausch (Patricia), Little Falls. A brother Harker, lives in Pittsburgh, Pa., and there are two sisters, Bertha Gordon, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mercy Gordon, St. Paul. There are ten grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's church, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. T Leo Keaveny officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. | Biography | Warren McKean "Buzz" Gordon Jr. was born July 1, 1919 in Little Falls, Morrison Co, Minnesota. He was the second of five children of Warren McKean Gordon Sr. and Georgiana St. Martin. As a child, approximately 1930, the family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he attended Creighton High School for a short time. The family returned to Little Falls where Buzz attended Little Falls High School where he graduated in 1939. After high school he joined the Minnesota National Guard and served his basic training at Camp Claiborne, LA. He was assigned to active duty at the start of World War II, 1942 and served in the European campaign. He served with the 5th Army in North Africa, Italy, and trained in Ireland and England. He received a Purple Heart for wounds received in Italy. An article in the Little Falls newspaper read: Sgt Warren Gordon Gets Purple Heart Wounded in action in Italy January 3, Sgt Warren (Buzz) Gordon, son of Mr. And Mrs. W.M. Gordon, has received the Purple Heart award. Warren received leg wounds when his outfit was bombed by about 25 German airmen. At the same time he was injured, one of his close friends, who was standing next to him was killed. It was the same bombing in which Sgt. John Patyk and Ronald DelaHunt were injured. Buzz was released from active duty in 1945 and he returned to Little Falls. In the fall of 1945 he moved to Chicago to attend Northern Illinois College of Ophthalmology in order to pursue a career in that field. For personal reasons he dropped out of school and returned to Little Falls, Minnesota to live. It was there that he met his future wife, Patricia Mary Durrenberger, originally from Perham, Minnesota. They were married at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Little Falls in August 14, 1946 and celebrated their wedding reception at the Little Falls Country Club. Buzz and Pat had four children, all born in Little Falls. They were Warren McKean Patrick "Sandy" Gordon III (June 17, 1947), Suzanne Marie Gordon (January 10, 1950), Nancy Ann Gordon (August 20, 1954), and James Patrick Gordon (December 8, 1956). In 1947 Buzz accepted civilian employment as a warehouse supervisor with the Minnesota National Guard at Camp Ripley, Minnesota, just 7 miles north of Little Falls. At the same time, he opened a tavern called the 34th Club on Highway 371 just north of Little Falls. He was a partner in this venture with Bill "Sonny" Arndt. They operated the tavern for about 18 months until it went out of business. In late 1950 he was called back to active duty because of the Korean Conflict. He was assigned to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin where he served for several months years until being discharged for his recurring medical problems. During his absence, Patricia and children, Sandy and Suzanne lived in an apartment above the American Legion club near the Northeast corner of First Street and Broadway in Little Falls. In June 1951 the family moved to a small, two-story, 3 bedroom home at 114 8th Street SE where they lived for approximately 25 years and raised a family of four children. During the late 1950's and 1960's, Buzz became involved as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. In appreciation for his outstanding efforts, he received many awards including the Silver Beaver Award. In addition, he served as the President of the Central Minnesota Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1973 Buzz received a disability retirement from his position as Chief Stock Controller at Camp Ripley due to his recurring stomach problems related to his service during World War II. In 1978, Buzz and Pat sold their family home and moved to an apartment about a mile from their former home. This is where they lived until his untimely passing in 1980. At the age of 60, Warren died in his sleep on March 27, 1980 at the home of his nephew, Michael Morris, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He had traveled to Minneapolis to attend a doctor's appointment and was staying with his nephew for the evening. The cause of his death was listed on his death certificate as a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Among other accomplishments, his obituary in the Little Falls newspaper said "Mr. Gordon was a World War II and Korean Veteran, a member of the executive board of Boy Scouts of America, and past president of Community Corrections. He was a member of Exchange Club, and a member of the Board of Housing and Urban Development. He was a past member of Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, and an usher and lector at St. Mary's Church". He was buried on March 31, 1980 at Calvary Cemetery in Little Falls with funeral services at the St. Mary's Catholic Church. | |

He was drafted into the US Army during the Viet Nam War based on his low lottery number (73) and the expiration of his student deferment (II-S) after his graduation from college. He was inducted at Los Angeles Armed Forces Induction Center and immediately sent to the North Fort at Fort Polk, LA for Basic Training. After Sandy completed the 8 week Basic Training course, he was transferred to Fort Richardson, Alaska in February 1972. He was given the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) as a clerk-typist based on his civilian acquired skill, as a college student. At Fort Richardson he was assigned to the Telephone Accounts Section of the base's Signal Corp unit, the Fixed Signal Operations Company, US Army Alaska. His duty office was called the Ice House which stood for Installation-Communications and Electronics. His commanding officer was Lt Col. Bobby G. Franklin, a man he highly respected. During his time in the Army, Sandy made use of his spare time by taking evening post-graduate Business and Accounting classes at the University of Alaska in Anchorage and for a time worked as the civilian night manager of the Fort Richardson Officers Club. In May 1973 he was named the "Soldier of the Month" for USASTRATCOM at Fort Richardson and later that year was awarded the Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM) for his work computerizing the telephone billing system on base. In the Supplemental Volume to the "Dictionary of Land Surveyors and Local cartographers of Great Britain and Ireland 1550-1850, edited by Peter Eden (William Dawson & Sons, Folkstone), a copy of which was reviewed at the West Register House in Edinburgh, the entry for William Gordon reads as follows: GORDON, W. 18(? 25)- 33, STF; mineral; in High Street, Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Kirkcudbright, civil and mineral engineer; pupil of Adam McPhail." The entry for Adam McPhail states: "1804-29; STF; of Newcastle-under-Lyme; at one time professor of mathematics at a military academy, London; trained W. Gordon." The West Register House also contains an extensive collection of old surveys which are indexed by surveyor. Only one survey, as of July 1992, was listed for William (RHP 13036-1861) and it is titled "Topographical Plans of Cally, Coppicewood, Alphabetically Arranged - 1861, Enlarged from the Ordinance Survey by W. Gordon". This volume was checked out and reviewed by this researcher. In the 1851 census of Woodhead, Parish of Anwoth, Kirkcudbrightshire, William is listed as "Surveyor, Auctioneer, Land Agent and caretaker of 220 Acres employing 6 laborers." |

| Note | circa 1850 | In a booklet titled "Gatehouse Memories" edited by George McCulloch for the Gatehouse of Fleet Community Council Bicentenary Committee - 1995, there is an article on page 2 titled "The Old Pub Scene in Gatehouse of Fleet Circa 1850". The article stated that in 1850 the population of Gatehouse was about 1,920 and it had about 20 pubs in the village. One pub called "The Commercial" was owned by William Gordon (an auctioneer) and Dalziel and James Wilson. Another memory on page 13 titled "Twa Galloway Ponies...." read as follows: "John Hall, druggist and William Gordon, auctioneer, were members of the Galloway Rifle Corps at the time of the great Edinburgh Review in 1861. As the two of them were proceeding along Princess Street an old woman, seeing them, cried out, "Oh there are twa Galloway ponies anyway; anyone can tell them easily: short p' the legs and gie near the grun". |
