Federal Reserve Bank right out of high school and worked there until diabetes took her leg. After her kidney and pancreas transplant, she lost her other leg. Brenda was THE most loving, sweet daughter a mother and father could have. Left missing her terribly are her father, Don Durenberger, Sr; mother and step-father, Gerry and Robert Hartley; brother and sister-in-law, Donnie, Jr. and Kelly Durenberger; god-daughters and nieces, Elisabeth and Emily; fiancé, Chris Larison; her many friends and her kitties, Buddy and Kee. Memorial service Sat., 11 AM at Parkway U.C.C., 3120 Washburn Ave. N., Mpls. Graveside service Sat., Sept. 9 at 11 AM at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Rochester, MN. Please gather at the cemetery office. Visitation TONIGHT and Fri. 5-8 PM at Gearty-Delmore Robbinsdale Chapel, 39th Ave. N. & W. Broadway and one hour prior to service at the church. Gearty-Delmore Robbinsdale 763-537-4511. |

He served as the athletic director at St. John's University for 41 years. George Durenberger first visited St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., in 1924 when he enrolled as a freshman. He was still there nearly five decades later - after a career of playing, coaching and promoting athletics and physical fitness. Durenberger, 90, the school's athletic director for 41 years, died Thursday in St. Cloud. He was the father of David Durenberger, former U.S. senator from Minnesota. The elder Durenberger wore a variety of hats at the school, many simultaneously. As a player, he was the school's first athlete to be named all-conference for three years in football, and lettered four years in basketball. After graduating, he became head basketball coach, an assistant in football and a staff member of the Liturgical Press. At age 25 he was named athletic director while also acting as head coach at various times in football, basketball and track. He also taught physical education courses and was an English and business instructor at St. John's prep school. He also found time to get a master's degree from the University of Minnesota and serve in civic and church organizations. In the late 1950s he was a member of the state advisory committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, the President's White House Youth Commission and the Governor's Committee on Physical Fitness. "He was one of the first to advocate physical fitness for all students, not just the ballplayers," said his wife, Isabelle. "He was always saying, 'A healthy body promotes a healthy mind.' And he promoted physical fitness for the women at St. Ben's, too." The College of St. Benedict is a companion school to St. John's. Durenberger and his wife spent much of their time in Florida after he retired in 1972. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, David, of Minneapolis and Washington, D.C; George Mark, of Eden Prairie, and Thomas, of Cottage Grove; two daughters, Constance Kneip, of Sussex, Wis., and Mary McLeod, of Dallas; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Abbey Church in Collegeville, with visitation at 9 a.m. |

| Obituary | 11 August 2017 | Obituary of Gordon Durenberger Gordon Durenberger died Aug. 2, 2017 at the age of 92 from congestive heart failure. He was born on Sept. 26, 1924 in LeSueur, MN, known locally as the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant. Gordon attended St. John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota. He joined the U.S. Army and served in Europe in General Patton's 76th Division in World War II. After the war he returned to St. John's then transferred to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, majoring in accounting. After graduation he was hired by A.C. Spark Plug Division of General Motors. In 1972 he was transferred by General Motors to their Goleta, California plant. Gordon retired from G.M. in 1989. In Milwaukee he was an active member of the National Association of Accountants. He continued his membership in Santa Barbara earning an Emeritus LIfe membership. He was a member of St. Raphaels church since 1972, active on the Finance Committee and Building Drive Committee. After retirement he joined the Santa Barbara Courthouse Docent Council and served as tour guide and treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the Santa Barbara Garden Club and had season tickets to the Santa Barbara Symphony and Opera. Gordon was preceded in death by parents, Leo and Gertrude (Bachman) Durenberger, and step-mother, Emma (Tiegs) Durenberger, older brother Robert Durenberger, younger brother Jack Durenberger and his wife and best friend, Mary Jo. Gordon is survived by son Paul (and wife Marjorie) Durenberger, daughter Jane (and husband Ted) Cotti, granddaughter Kathleen Cotti, sister-in-law Shirley Durenberger, sister Carol (and husband Randy) Cote, sister-in-law Sylvia Hanley, brother-in-law Jerome Hanley as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. Gordon's body was donated to The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Raphael's Church, 5444 Hollister Ave, Santa Barbara, California on August 18, 3:00pm. A reception to follow in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Santa Barbara Catholic Charities Food Fund, 609 E. Haley St., Santa Barbara, 93101 or St. Raphael's School Scholarship Fund. Published in The Santa Barbara News-Press Online Edition from Aug. 11 to Aug. 15, 2017. |

Durenberger, 55 years old, was burned to death about 1 o'clock this afternoon in a fire which entirely gutted his building on South Front street entailing a loss estimated more than $50,000. The body had not been recovered at 1 o'clock and the flames were spreading to the Lynard Produce company building adjoining the Durenberger building.
