Note2005"Monson Foundation Supports Dentistry and the Community
The Saint Paul District Dental Society has had the privilege of managing and distributing funds from the George S. Monson Foundation since 1983. Dr. Monson was a Saint Paul dentist and a member of the Saint Paul District Dental Society until 1933. In 1981, his adopted daughter, Ruth Monson, left nearly $170,000 to the SPDDS for the purpose of supporting education in the field of dentistry.
The George S. Monson Fund is a combination of the Monson donation and part of an earlier trust dating back to 1919. The union of these two funds has been administered by the SPDDS since 1983. Currently Dr. Tom Neafus is the chair of the Monson Foundation Committee, and he has supplied the information for this article.
For ease of administration, the Monson Fund is invested and administered by the Minneapolis Foundation. Proceeds of the Monson Fund are given to University of Minnesota dental students, dental assisting students, and dental education institutions. Proceeds are also used to help offset the cost of the SPDDS Midwinter Meeting. While there are a number of recipients, the largest portion of the endowment goes to dental students.
The Monson Foundation has also supported the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, including $10,000 to the President's Club and $2,000 for the 2000 x 2000 x 2000 program. The Foundation has also benefited children by helping to support Children's Health Day at the Science Museum. The balance of the fund has tripled since its inception, even while disseminating the proceeds for the last 22 years.
Future plans for the Foundation include increasing the scope and size of the scholarship contributions and planning to help the Dunwoody Institute launch a dental technician progam by donating an annual scholarship. With adequate funding, the Foundation will continue to reach into the future by meeting and exceeding its goals. Your generosity is critically important to its success. Please consider making a donation if possible." (Northwest Dentistry, Journal of the Minnesota Dental Association, September-October 2005.)

Note2010"The Saint Paul District Dental Society (SPDDS) has had the privilege of distributing funds from the George S. Monson Foundation for more than twenty years. Dr. Monson was a Saint Paul dentist and member until 1933. In 1981 his daughter, Ruth Monson, left several thousand dollars to create the George S. Monson Foundation for the purpose of supporting education in the field of dentistry." (Northwest Dentistry, Minnesota Dental Society Newsletter, January-February 2010.)
