OBITUARY

It is with sincere regret that we have today to record the death of two of the old identities of this district, two sisters, Mrs Isabella Henderson, of North Balclutha, and Mrs Donald Campbell, wife of Mr Donald Campbell, of Stoney Creek. Both of the deceased belonged to the King family that arrived in the Colony by the Robert Henderson, nearly 40 years ago. The surviving members of that family now are — Mrs Adam Houliston and Mrs John Nelson, both well known in this district, Mrs A. N. Jowett and Mrs A. Hughan, at present in the North Island, Mr James King (Hillend), and Mr John King (Dunstan). The other brother, Mr Alex. King, it will be remembered, died at Benhar some months ago. Mrs Henderson resided in Dunedin for about 10 years after her arrival in the Colony, being married about a year after her arrival. For a number of years she resided with her husband at Hillend, but on his death, about 18 years ago, she came to reside in Balclutha, where she has resided ever since. She is survived by one son, Mr A. C. Henderson. Mrs. Henderson was of a kindly, neighbourly disposition, and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. About two years' ago she was attacked by that dread disease cancer, and it was that that finally carried her off, about midday on Saturday, at the age of 62 years. During the last few months she suffered greatly, but she bore it all with great fortitude.

Her sister, Mrs Campbell, died the following morning. She was in her usual health the night before. Indeed, for the most part she always enjoyed excellent health. On hearing of her sister's death, she came down and spent an hour or two attending to several matters connected with the latter's death, afterwards spending a portion of the evening with her daughter, Mrs John M'Guffog. She went home and retired to bed as usual, apparently enjoying the best of health. About two o'clock in the morning her husband heard her give a low moan, and giving her a, nudge asked her what was the matter. Getting no answer, he concluded she had gone to sleep, or had been speaking in her sleep. About 7 o'clock on Sunday morning her daughter observed that her mother was not up and about as usual. She went into the bedroom and asked what was the matter with her mother that she was not up. Mr Campbell remarked that she was tired, to let her take a rest. On touching her, however, it was found that she was dead. Presumably she had died about 2 o'clock. Her age was 66 years. Needless to say Mr Campbell and the members of the family experienced a great shock. Mrs Campbell was married in the Old Country, but she and her husband came out in the same ship as the Kings. Together with her husband she has resided in the Hillend district for 35 years. Like her sister she was of a kind and obliging disposition, and her house was a synonym for liberality and hospitality. Visitors to her house were ever made welcome, and the poorest swagger was never turned away empty handed. She is survived by her husband and a family of four sons and five daughters. The daughters are — ? Mrs D. Gilbert (Christchurch), Mrs John M'Guffog (Balclutha), Mrs John Thomson, and Mrs John Begg, jnr., both of Hillend. The other daughter, Miss Helen, is still at home. The sons Lachlan and John have farms at Hillend, while Adam and Arthur are at home. Three sons are dead. Universal sympathy is felt for Mr Campbell, now left in his declining years in not over robust health without his help-meet. Both he and the family have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their irreparable loss. The funerals both take place today.

Obituary	6 June 1899	Obituary of Isabella King Clutha Leader, Volume XXV, Issue 1304, 6 June 1899, Page 3 OBITUARY It is with sincere regret that we have today to record the death of two of the old identities of this district, two sisters, Mrs Isabella Henderson, of North Balclutha, and Mrs Donald Campbell, wife of Mr Donald Campbell, of Stoney Creek. Both of the deceased belonged to the King family that arrived in the Colony by the Robert Henderson, nearly 40 years ago. The surviving members of that family now are — Mrs Adam Houliston and Mrs John Nelson, both well known in this district, Mrs A. N. Jowett and Mrs A. Hughan, at present in the North Island, Mr James King (Hillend), and Mr John King (Dunstan). The other brother, Mr Alex. King, it will be remembered, died at Benhar some months ago. Mrs Henderson resided in Dunedin for about 10 years after her arrival in the Colony, being married about a year after her arrival. For a number of years she resided with her husband at Hillend, but on his death, about 18 years ago, she came to reside in Balclutha, where she has resided ever since. She is survived by one son, Mr A. C. Henderson. Mrs. Henderson was of a kindly, neighbourly disposition, and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. About two years' ago she was attacked by that dread disease cancer, and it was that that finally carried her off, about midday on Saturday, at the age of 62 years. During the last few months she suffered greatly, but she bore it all with great fortitude. Her sister, Mrs Campbell, died the following morning. She was in her usual health the night before. Indeed, for the most part she always enjoyed excellent health. On hearing of her sister's death, she came down and spent an hour or two attending to several matters connected with the latter's death, afterwards spending a portion of the evening with her daughter, Mrs John M'Guffog. She went home and retired to bed as usual, apparently enjoying the best of health. About two o'clock in the morning her husband heard her give a low moan, and giving her a, nudge asked her what was the matter. Getting no answer, he concluded she had gone to sleep, or had been speaking in her sleep. About 7 o'clock on Sunday morning her daughter observed that her mother was not up and about as usual. She went into the bedroom and asked what was the matter with her mother that she was not up. Mr Campbell remarked that she was tired, to let her take a rest. On touching her, however, it was found that she was dead. Presumably she had died about 2 o'clock. Her age was 66 years. Needless to say Mr Campbell and the members of the family experienced a great shock. Mrs Campbell was married in the Old Country, but she and her husband came out in the same ship as the Kings. Together with her husband she has resided in the Hillend district for 35 years. Like her sister she was of a kind and obliging disposition, and her house was a synonym for liberality and hospitality. Visitors to her house were ever made welcome, and the poorest swagger was never turned away empty handed. She is survived by her husband and a family of four sons and five daughters. The daughters are — ? Mrs D. Gilbert (Christchurch), Mrs John M'Guffog (Balclutha), Mrs John Thomson, and Mrs John Begg, jnr., both of Hillend. The other daughter, Miss Helen, is still at home. The sons Lachlan and John have farms at Hillend, while Adam and Arthur are at home. Three sons are dead. Universal sympathy is felt for Mr Campbell, now left in his declining years in not over robust health without his help-meet. Both he and the family have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their irreparable loss. The funerals both take place today.

Clutha Leader, Volume XXV, Issue 1305, 9 June 1899, Page 5 The funerals of the late Mrs. Donald Campbell, and also of the late Mrs. Henderson took place on Tuesday, and were largely attended. In fact, the cortege that followed the remains of the former to their last resting place was one of the longest that we have seen in the district, being close on half a mile in length.

Pastor, conducted the impressive ceremony and with the exchange of rings:two souls, that beat as one, were made happy. The bride looked lovely in her pretty wedding costume of poi du soie (white silk) trimmed with white applique wearing a while veil and white roses The groom by her side was tastily attired and both appeared happy in possession of the prize they had won.

The contracting parties were accompanied by four couples, Misses Christina Kirchhoff, Anna Militrer, Louisa Albrecht and Martha Glade with Messrs. Willie Kirchhoff, Louis Kirchhoff, Willie Kirchhoff and Theo Zersen, respectively.
Marie Kirchhoff was flower girl. All the ladies were dressed in white and carried white roses. The gentlemen wore the conventional black and bouquets.

After the ceremony a procession of about twenty teams, a dozen of the rigs being handsomely decorated, drove to the home of the bride's parents where a sumptuous wedding feast was spread on long tables on the lawn under the trees. It was a happy occasion and proved that people, both old and young, can enjoy themselves and have a delightful time without dancing or the use of intoxicating liquors, which are contrary to the creed of the Lutheran church. Several hundred invited guests including four Lutheran clergymen, Revs. Noack, Haake, and Leverenz were present to help fittingly celebrate the important event and remained in social intercourse till late in the evening when the grounds were lighted by Chinese lanterns. The bride was the recipient of many beautiful and valuable
presents such as silverware, chinaware, brass lamps, fancy articles, pictures, table and bed linen, etc., etc.

The bride is a charming lady who has lived here all her life and has many friends who esteem her highly and rejoice in her happiness.

Rev Fred Zersen, the groom is a worthy ambitious young Lutheran home missionary located at Syltestou, North Dakota. He has superintended the building of two new churches the past year, and conducts regular services for five congregations in that locality, who gave him a six weeks vacation for this important event. The parsonage is ready for the pastor and his bride who expect to leave for their new home in about a week. They start out with bright prospects and the best wishes of a large circle of relatives and friends. The Herald tenders its congratulations and will keep them posted on affairs in this locality.

The New York Herald makes the following statement:

"The American emigrant ship Monarch of the Seas, which left Liverpool for New York on the afternoon of the 19th of March last, with a valuable cargo and 671 passengers, is now, lacking but two days, four months at sea, and as yet nothing has been heard of her. The Monarch of the Seas was, without exception, one of the finest emigrant ships that ever left this port. She was under the command of Captain Robert Kirkaldy, a clever and experienced seaman, and was in every respect a first-class vessol. She was built in this city by Messrs. Roosevelt and Joyce, in 1854 ; rated A 1 ; was copper and iron fastened; 1,979 tons burden, 223ft. in length, 43ft. breadth of beam, 29ft depth of hold, and had three full decks. The missing vessel sailed from Liverpool with about 1,600 tons of freight."
